Maine Medical Partners Adult Infectious Diseases
Maine Medical Partners – Adult Infectious Diseases specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of communicable diseases for adults. Our practice features specialty-trained and board-certified physicians who deliver comprehensive care. A referral from a primary care physician is necessary to arrange an appointment.
Conditions We Treat
Our practice diagnoses and develops treatment plans for illnesses including meningitis, bone infections, heart infections, post-operative infections, HIV-AIDS, and Lyme disease.
Maine Medical Partners – Adult Infectious Diseases provides Travel Medicine consultations for anyone planning to travel abroad — as well as for those who have returned to the states. Our physicians are board-certified in tropical and infectious diseases, and are state-certified providers for yellow fever vaccine. They will review your itinerary and recommend appropriate vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis, food and water precautions, and educational material. Our goal is to promote and ensure safety and health during travel — for pleasure or business — to foreign countries.
An important part of preparing for travel is immunizations. Immunization decisions are based on individualized considerations, such as the traveler’s general state of health, proposed itinerary, anticipated activities, and length of stay.
Since providing vaccine advice requires an individual risk-benefit review, we require that patients desiring travel vaccinations be seen by one of our physicians well in advance of your trip. Some vaccinations require several doses, spaced weeks apart, to provide maximum protection. Therefore, it is helpful for our staff to see you at least 6 weeks before your travel departure date.
Following is a partial list of immunizations offered through the Travel Clinic:
• Hepatitis A and B
• Inactivated polio
• Meningococcal disease
• Typhoid
• Japanese encephalitis
• Rabies
• Tetanus and diphtheria
• Yellow fever (state-certified providers)
Since some illnesses can emerge weeks after returning home, we encourage the returning traveler to call us, especially in cases of intestinal illnesses, fevers, and rashes which persist or develop weeks or months after returning.
