Caring for You with Compassion and Respect

Lillian F Conover, MD

Lillian Conover, MD

I am an obstetrician- gynecologist. I initially gravitated towards medicine as a high school student driven by a basic interest in surgery and science. My subsequent education and experience introduced me to the broad public health challenges and benefits associated with access to comprehensive family planning services, cancer screening, as well as safe, effective, and well informed obstetrical and gynecologic care globally in Haiti and Peru and locally here in Maine. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and briefly thought that I would be a medical researcher, but I became more and more passionate about the social justice values surrounding reproductive health and knew that becoming a physician and working with patients would be the most fulfilling life plan. Within the OB/GYN specialty, my interests remain broad and involve family planning, infertility, obstetrical care, as well as medical and surgical care of other gynecologic concerns such as vulvar and cervical dysplasia, pelvic pain, fibroids, and prolapse. Regardless of the reason for caring for a patient, I believe that of utmost importance most is listening carefully and providing accurate information to empower people to make thoughtful decisions about their bodies. While not at work, you may find me downeast navigating a sailboat through the fog, gardening, traveling, or running.

Dawn Klinner-Albright, PA-C

I grew up in the Midwest and had my first encounter working with a PA while in the military right out of high school. I served in the US Army from 1990-2000 as a medic (Active Duty in Germany x 2yrs & Florida National Guard x 8yrs). After completing PA school in 2003 at Barry University in Miami, I worked at Bridgeport Hospital and one of their community health clinics in CT for nearly 8 years. And decided to move to Southern Maine to be closer to my husband’s family. My husband is also a PA, my daughter is a cosmetologist and we have an athletic teenaged boy in high school. We are very active in our community’s sporting events, you will likely see me volunteering in the Snack Shack or moving the “Chains” on the football field. I take pride and feel extremely privileged to be working in ob/gyn. Women’s health issues can be very personal and sensitive and I don’t take that lightly. I specialize in surgical assisting, contraception counseling, adolescent/young adult gynecology and obstetrics care.

I never thought I would find a career in Women’s Health, but I had some great role models in medical school that mad it obvious that this was where I belonged. I came to medicine a little later in life and my life experience has given me more insight. I don’t have a specific focus to my practice which is what keeps my coming to work every day interesting. From delivering babies, to contraception, to surgical interventions – it is a privilege to care for women at all stages of their lives, and I am honored to have an impact on them and their families. When not in the office, you may find me at any of the fabulous breweries in Maine, on a disc golf course, or on the Peloton leaderboard (#abouttime).

Most often patients will tell you what is wrong with them, if you just listen." That quote resonated with me since I first heard it during a medical internship I did as a college freshman, and after many years in clinical practice I think it still rings true. In addition to listening carefully, I like to work with patients to identify their goals and what is most meaningful to them. My style is to be respectful but straightforward, explaining diagnosis and treatment options in a way that is straightforward and clear to patients. In addition to obstetric care, I have an interest in management of incontinence as well as minimally invasive hysterectomy. It is rewarding to be able to impact the quality of my patients’ lives in meaningful ways. I have also been involved in leadership roles with MaineHealth and the Maine Chapter of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Early in my medical career I became interested in trying to improve the healthcare system across the board, not just in my own office. Outside of work I have many hobbies such as hiking, biking, photography, cooking, and spending time with my family. My wife is a pediatrician with Southern Maine Health Care, and we have two teenage children and three dogs.

I get asked frequently why I chose a career in Women’s Health. During my freshman year of college in a pharmacy program I was taking a psychology class that presented a case with a woman struggling with infertility. I found this case so interesting I started to learn more about infertility and women’s health in general. Within a few weeks I talked with my parents and my advisor as I was determined to switch to a premedical program with the intention to become an OB/GYN. During medical school I kept an open mind but found my interests consistently were around women’s health. Over the last few years I have found that my interests are focused on obstetrics and management of high-risk obstetrical patients as well as infertility and preventative care. I enjoy the continuity of care during pregnancy and with seeing patients for routine annual examinations. I appreciate guiding patients through the normal transitions of life including adolescence to menopause. I love learning about my patients beyond their medical history and needs. I am a big believer in food as medicine and the effects of lifestyle on our overall health. Outside of work I love hiking, cycling, balanced with cooking and experiencing new restaurants. I am also frequently in the midst of a home DIY project. I have a very supportive husband and a spirited daughter as well as a dog and a dozen chickens!

The best advice I ever got was from my Dad who said, “It doesn’t matter what you do for work, just make sure you love what you do”. He was an attorney who worked long hours and simply loved his life. I have had the honor of practicing Obstetrics and Gynecology for over 30 years. It has been a true pleasure. I have enjoyed seeing babies I have delivered grow into teenagers, then young women and then mothers themselves. I have been blessed to care for up to 4 generations of women in families.  I believe that listening to a woman’s story will always lead down the correct path. Connecting to patients makes this job so rewarding. I continue to grow and learn from each patient. I see my role as educating women on their options, for whatever health issue they face, and then providing the best care possible for each individual.  Outside of work I have a wonderful husband, a physician as well, who keeps me grounded. Two grown children, who are forging ahead with their lives, one in public health and the other an educator. And to keep me busy there is always a dog at my side for long walks on the beach, hikes in the woods or simply cuddling while I read on a rainy day.

I grew up in southern Maine and have had the privilege of working at SMHC since 2009. I love getting to know my patients and supporting them through many of their lives' biggest transitions. I believe that patients are the most important member of the healthcare team, and I strive to spend time getting to know them as individuals. Listening to each patient's story is the foundation to providing them the best care, and this is where I always like to start. In my free time I keep busy with my three children and husband, enjoying the Maine outdoors. I love to travel and am involved in medical relief work in both India and Nigeria.

I started out my career path planning to be a scientist, however after working in a lab for a couple years, I realized that I needed a job with more human contact. I switched to pursuing medicine and have never regretted it. I was drawn to Women’s Health because of the variety it offers: getting to know patients through their yearly visits, performing surgery, and delivering babies. I enjoy helping women through the unique situations and challenges that they face from adolescence to childbearing to menopause and everything in between. My areas of clinical interest include minimally invasive surgery, pelvic pain, pelvic prolapse, and incontinence as well as prenatal care. I try to learn about my patients’ lives so that I can see them as whole individuals and help them make healthcare decisions based on their own unique situations. Helping my patients work through their health issues and come out in a better place gives me great satisfaction and delivering babies never gets old! When I am not caring for my patients at work, you will find me caring for things at home including my three kids, cats, chickens, and vegetable garden.

While attending medical school in Washington, DC I was surprised to discover how much I enjoyed my OB/GYN rotation. Not only were the providers and staff some of the most friendly and supportive people I have worked with, but this particular field of medicine allows a connection - a relationship - with patients that can't be matched. I have never once regretted making the decision to devote my career to women's health. Over the years I have been fortunate to associate with; and also work with; some very accomplished and notable experts in our field. Through my significant experience I have been repeatedly reminded how important it is to not only remain up to date with the latest advances in women's health but also to take the time to listen and understand the individual needs of each patient. I am especially happy that circumstances eventually developed that allowed me to return to my native New England to practice. I feel blessed to work in a setting that supports my philosophy of care that is based on a foundation of trust that comes from consistent professionalism and respect. This allows the provider and patient to work together as an effective team to address her particular needs.
