Advanced Heart Failure Program

The MaineHealth Advanced Heart Failure program supports patients with hearts that have lost the ability to pump enough blood to their body tissues. When too little blood is pumped, the organs and other tissues do not receive enough oxygen and nutrients to function properly.

Heart failure can be caused by coronary artery disease (CAD), heart attack, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart valve problems, viral infections and other diseases of the heart muscle (myocardium), as well as drug and alcohol abuse. Services are delivered through a regional network of MaineHealth care sites—providing heart failure patients with access to coordinated care, treatments and testing, close to home.

Heart Failure and Mechanical Circulatory Support

Maine Medical Center (MMC) has a long history of providing state-of-the-art care for patients with advanced heart failure. Our multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, electrophysiologists and nurses works collaboratively to support patients through all stages of heart failure.

We use the latest equipment and surgical therapies including mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), temporary percutaneous ventricular assist devices to support both the right and left ventricles (VAD), and durable implantable left ventricular assist devices (LVAD). MMC was designated as a “Gold Level Center of Excellence” by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) in 2017. MMC was recertified by The Gold Seal of Approval from Joint Commission as an Advanced Certification Program for Ventricular Assist Device in 2018.
