Having a baby can be a very exciting time. It can also be full of worry about the health of your baby. If you or your baby are facing complications, you can trust the experts at MaineHealth to use the latest technological advances in fetal diagnostics to provide you with the best care possible.
What is fetal diagnostics?
Fetal diagnostics are tests done to check for certain disorders before a baby is born. Some disorders are genetic, meaning they are passed on from parents to baby. Testing can help find these problems before birth which can help parents make decisions about the care their new infant will get. Some problems can also be treated before birth or will need special treatment right after birth.
Some of the fetal diagnostic tests you can get at MaineHealth are:
-
Amniocentesis ( a test for genetic disorders)
-
Chorionic Villus Sampling ( a test for genetic disorders and problems with chromosomes)
-
Fetal blood sampling ( a test to look for problems like an infection)
-
Nuchal translucency testing ( a way to look for extra fluid in your baby’s neck)
-
Fetal echocardiography ( a test to look at the structure of your baby’s heart)
Do I need fetal diagnostics?
Not all women need these tests. They are recommended for certain women who are considered high risk. Some reasons for fetal diagnostic testing include:
-
Being over the age of 35
-
Have had a premature baby in the past

Have had a baby with a birth defect in the past
-
Are pregnant with more than one baby

Your doctor will be able to tell you if any of these tests are right for you and your baby.
