What is clinical research?
Through clinical research, doctors find new ways to treat medical conditions and diseases. A research study helps to find out if a new drug, device, intervention, or treatment is effective. During a research study, volunteers test new methods while being carefully watched by a doctor. Since 2014, the Pen Bay Clinical Research Department has collaborated with multiple clinicians to conduct investigator-initiated studies involving:
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Atrial Fibrillation
- Parkinson's Disease
- Blood Disorders
- Functional Foods Effect on Cholesterol
- Heart Failure
- Hepatitis C
- Post-Lumbar Puncture Headaches
Oncology Research includes more than 30 studies open to our patients to be treated here at Pen Bay in many types of cancer including:
- Multiple Myeloma

What is a clinical trial?
A clinical trial is a health-related research study in human beings that follows a predefined plan called a protocol.
Participants in clinical trials may gain access to new research treatments before they are widely available. They may help others by contributing to medical research while playing a more active role in their own health care.
What will this cost me?
Clinical trial participation is free for eligible patients.
Will my doctor be involved?
We will talk with your doctor to be sure a study is appropriate for you. Copies of all study testing results will be sent to your physician.
What if I don’t like it?
Participants are free to quit the study and/or medication at any time for any reason.
