Family Medicine Residency

We are an academic department of family medicine committed to improving the health of the communities we serve through direct patient care, medical education and scholarly inquiry. Though our scope of practice ranges from full spectrum clinical care to focused areas of expertise in education and research, we approach our work through the shared lens of family medicine. Our Work

  • Clinical Care: We provide relationship-centered care in both community and hospital settings. Our clinical teams care for the whole person across the lifespan within the context of family and community structures. We focus on health prevention and promotion, while also caring for those with chronic diseases and serious illnesses.
  • Education: We host a 21-person family medicine residency program; four fellowships in integrative, preventive, sports and addiction medicine; and a division of preventive and community medicine. We are committed to inter-professional education, designing curriculum and teaching medical, nursing and social work students, as well as pharmacy residents. We are well represented in the Academy at MMC Institute for Teaching Excellence (MITE) and in the Department of Medical Education leadership. We also participate in educational programs to encourage and mentor youth interested in the health professions.
  • Research: Our students, residents, fellows and faculty are actively engaged in scholarship activities, presenting and publishing their work at regional and national conferences. We have strong ties to the MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR) and the Center for Outcomes Research & Evaluation. We also collaborate with Dartmouth, the University of Vermont, and the three other Family Medicine residency programs in Maine.

Message from the Program Director

Congratulations on choosing family medicine, the most rewarding, challenging and professionally satisfying field of medicine. By deciding to become a family physician, you have chosen to best position yourself to meet the health care needs of patients, families, and communities. The MMC Family Medicine Residency Program is devoted to providing a superior educational experience for family medicine residents and students by:

As Program Director, my goal is for each of our residents to graduate feeling like a competent family physician, prepared to practice in any setting. Along the way, each will feel supported, academically challenged and empowered to maintain a good balance of personal and professional life.

The MMC Family Medicine Residency is a strong academic residency program. The education we provide our residents is exceptional. All graduates pass their board exam and leave feeling highly competent in the specialty of family medicine. Both our outpatient and inpatient settings provide stimulating environments in which our residents learn and improve.


Clinics are Level 3 NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Homes - There are myriad opportunities for learning including various QI projects, group visits co-led by residents and faculty, and our innovative Hospital to Home (H2H) multidisciplinary transitional visit for patients just discharged from the hospital. We also offer Integrated Medication Assisted Treatment (IMAT) for our patients with opioid use disorders.

Daily ambulatory teaching before afternoon clinic - Residents present a case or topic to further each other's learning. 

Wednesday teaching didactics - From 1-5pm on Wednesday afternoons, residents have protected teaching time to attend educational sessions on a variety of topics. This includes protected time for resident support group, journal clubs, and weekly resident business meeting.

Simulation Center - Once monthly, all residents attend a 4-hour session at the Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation, and Simulation. Sessions include simulations of various inpatient and outpatient scenarios as well as procedural skills training.


Case mix - MMC is a tertiary care center but also serves as a community hospital, making the case mix of patients ideal for resident education.

Morning report - Most mornings on our inpatient family medicine service, a resident presents an admission to discuss evaluation, management, and clinical reasoning.

Teaching rounds - The senior resident will teach various sessions to the inpatient team and ensure attendings from various specialties and other educators (such as respiratory therapists) teach the team.

Interdisciplinary care rounds - Daily rounds occur for our patients that include a discussion among physicians, nurses, nutritionists, physical and occupational therapists, and discharge planners to ensure optimal patient care.

Radiology rounds - Once a week, our inpatient team reviews patient films from the previous week with a radiology resident.

We also have opportunities for overseas education. Residents can spend elective time on medical trips abroad. Previous residents have gone to places such as the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Vietnam. Portland is home to immigrants and refugees from all over the globe so there is a robust international presence and ongoing cultural education in our clinics.

  • Family Medicine inpatient service cares for adults, newborns, children, and obstetric patients, all supervised by family physicians
  • Great case mix, as MMC provides care for both common community disorders as well as disorders that require a tertiary care medical center
  • Deliver obstetric patients under the supervision of our family medicine doctors
  • Daily interdisciplinary care rounds including physicians, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, physical and occupational therapists
  • All inpatient training is at Maine Medical Center, a nationally ranked hospital and the top hospital in Maine

Limited 24-hour call – 2nd and 3rd year residents work 24-hour call shifts only 2-3 times per year

Our fourth year chief resident position is a great way to supplement a resident’s education, learn new skills, and positively impact the residency program. The chief serves as a liaison between faculty and residents and has myriad functions including:

  • Helping other residents as needs arise
  • Seeing their own continuity patients in clinic
  • Precepting residents in clinic
  • Being a voice at both faculty and resident meetings
  • Improving leadership and teaching skills through workshops and readings
  • Assisting at workshops geared towards medical students

While not a true faculty development year, there is a focus on teaching and leadership. Yet the beauty about our chief position is that it can be taken in a number of different directions, with limited administrative duties compared to traditional chief positions and ample elective time. Most chiefs choose a project to work on throughout the year that will improve our program.
