Thank you for your interest in the MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) Gastroenterology Fellowship. Our three-year, ACGME-accredited program was approved in April 2024 and welcomed its inaugural class of fellows in July 2025.
Fellows train across two principal clinical sites:
- MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland - Inpatient gastroenterology and hepatology services in Portland, ME
- MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Biddeford - Outpatient gastroenterology services in Biddeford, ME
We accept two fellows per class, ensuring a supportive, high-quality training environment. The curriculum includes dedicated subspecialty electives and protected time for research, allowing fellows to build a strong foundation in clinical gastroenterology while pursuing areas of individual interest.
Mission statement and program objectives
Our mission is to educate and train fellows to become professional, compassionate, and independent clinicians with competence in the interpretation of medical evidence, communication skills, and the appropriate diagnostic work-up and procedure based treatment of patients with various gastroenterological and hepatological conditions.
Given the social and demographic realities of the community we serve, the training will address the unique challenges in the care of patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and rural settings, while working to research and innovate the gastroenterological and hepatologic care delivered to these populations.
Our fellowship objectives:
- Graduates will be proficient and competent gastroenterologists with the cognitive and procedural ability to independently diagnose and manage gastroenterological and hepatologic conditions.
- Graduates will be prepared to serve their community's clinical gastroenterological needs.
- Graduates will receive dedicated training in the care of rural populations, reflecting the unique demographics of our State.
- Didactics will emphasize evidence-based decision making, critical reviews of the literature, and team-based and inter-professional approaches to gastroenterology care.
- Fellows will work to innovate the care delivery they participate in through quality improvement projects and mentored research with the goal of sharing their work with the medical community at large.
- Fellows will participate in the education of residents and medical students.
