The mission of the MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) urology residency program is to provide a rigorous and comprehensive postgraduate educational experience in the art and science of urology. The focus is clinically oriented with a strong foundation in all aspects of urology as well as quality and clinical outcomes research. After six months of general surgery, the four and a half clinical years are structured to provide the resident with didactic teaching sessions in the pathophysiology of urologic disease processes, a gradual increase in clinical decision-making and responsibility, and progressive teaching of all technical skills required to be a complete urologic surgeon.
The philosophical framework surrounding the residency is to foster an environment of inquisitiveness and study recognizing that urology is a surgical subspecialty with a strong tradition of innovation and technological advancement. The relationship between attending surgeons and residents is one of mentoring, rather than traditionally hierarchical, and the working environment is team-oriented. This includes daily attending participation, clinical teaching rounds, and a spirit of broad openness and discussions of how to best provide patient care and how to advance the delivery of urologic care.
It is the objective of this program to train the complete urologist. The MHMMC trained urologist should be expert in all technical aspects of urology, have the analytic skills to develop, execute, and interpret clinical studies, and be fully prepared for a non-academic or academic career path.
