Pulmonary & Critical Care

The Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Division at Maine Medical Center cares for patients with both acute and chronic lung conditions as well as intensive care problems. We provide nationally recognized up-to-date and advanced treatment options for both inpatients and outpatients.

Education

Our teaching physicians hold faculty appointments at the Tufts University School of Medicine and are involved with training medical students, Internal Medicine residents, and clinical fellows. The division runs a 3-year Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The Kjeldgaard Symposium was established in 1986 in remembrance of J. Mark Kjeldgaard, M.D., former Director of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine in the department of Internal Medicine at MMC.

Research

The MMC Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine division has longstanding clinical research programs with focus areas including cystic fibrosis, diffuse lung disease, medical critical care, neurologic critical care, and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Medical Critical Care

The Division of Medical Critical Care in the Special Care Unit at Maine Medical Center cares for patients with a broad range of intensive care problems from Maine and throughout New England, including respiratory failure (pneumonia, ARDS, obstructive airways crises, neuromuscular disease), gastrointestinal problems (GI bleeding, hepatic dysfunction, pancreatitis), blood pressure emergencies (sepsis, hemorrhagic, and vasodilatory shock, hypertensive crises), metabolic threats (renal failure, electrolyte abnormalities, diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar coma, thyroid emergencies), and toxicologic crises (drug overdoses, acute drug withdrawal, adverse drug reactions). The Medical Critical Care division includes nationally recognized experts with cutting-edge research in several topics, including ICU sedation, Organ Donation, Tele-medicine services, and complex mechanical ventilation.

Neurocritical Care

Learn how, through the Neuroscience Institute, MMC has further refined trauma and critical care for neuro patients, providing around-the-clock coverage to serve this complex population.
