Maine Medical Center

Fellowship Programs

MaineHealth Medical Center (MHMMC) is an independent academic medical center serving our local diverse communities, and a tertiary referral center for the entire state of Maine and eastern New Hampshire. MHMMC currently trains over 360 residents and fellows in our 17 ACGME-accredited residency programs, 18 ACGME-accredited fellowship programs and 3 rural tracks.

The robust clinical experience is supported by high-quality didactic sessions, dedicated faculty and simulation-based teaching at the Hannaford Simulation Center. Residents have ample opportunity and mentorship to pursue scholarly research, quality improvement and health care disparity projects within their training programs.

A history of excellence in graduate medical education

MHMMC is the flagship medical center of the MaineHealth system, building on more than 150 years of commitment to GME. MHMMC has a national reputation as a leader in interprofessional, team-based training with an ACGME- and AMA-grant funded “Interprofessional Partnership to Advance Care and Education” grant. MaineHealth Maine Medical Center has received multiple federal, state and private grants to support innovative graduate medical education, including an emphasis on rural and underserved medical community training, urban underserved, addiction medicine and workforce development grants.

Rural training opportunities

MHMMC, along with three other Maine ACGME-accredited sponsoring institutions, received a large grant for the innovative “Maine Rural GME Education (MERGE) Collaborative" to create an infrastructure of GME training sites across rural Maine. Though the majority of GME training occurs at the flagship MHMMC, residents and fellows have rotations and electives at important clinical sites across Maine.

Academic tracks

MHMMC offers five academic tracks to support residents and fellows who desire more specialized training:

  1. Resident Research: 30-month longitudinal track for residents
  2. Clinical Informatics: 14-month longitudinal track for residents
  3. Resident Education and Leadership (CELT): 24-month longitudinal track for residents
  4. Fellow Clinician Educator: 14-month longitudinal track for fellows
  5. Healthcare Administration and Leadership Track (HALT): 14-month longitudinal track for any trainee who desires more experience in health care administration
