Referring Patients to the Maine Tobacco HelpLine
Referring patients to the Maine Tobacco HelpLine is a reliable and evidence-based treatment option for busy health care professionals. This video follows one patient's experience with the HelpLine.
MaineHealth System
MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence (CTI) promotes evidence-based tobacco treatments across the MaineHealth system through consultation and technical assistance to providers and clinical staff. MaineHealth member hospitals offer tobacco counseling for inpatients and outpatients that use tobacco and support tobacco-free campus policies in an effort to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all.
Practice Improvement
CTI works with MaineHealth system hospitals and practices to integrate referrals to the Maine Tobacco HelpLine into electronic health records (eHR). The goal is to increase the number of patients screened for tobacco use and offered evidence-based tobacco treatment services. Embedding tobacco quitline referrals into an eHR increases referrals to evidence-based tobacco treatment, and improves the quality of referrals when paired with onsite-training, performance feedback, and technical assistance. CTI conducts ongoing performance improvement activities using enhanced academic detailing techniques to drive tobacco intervention improvements across the MaineHealth system.
The QuitLink
The Maine Tobacco HelpLine accepts provider-assisted referrals, or patients self-refer from The QuitLink.
