Pulmonary Hypertension | Complex Dyspnea Program

The MaineHealth Pulmonary Hypertension - Complex Dyspnea program is jointly offered by Chest Medicine Associate pulmonologists and MaineHealth cardiologists to treat patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) and diagnose patients experiencing shortness of breath (dyspnea).. Our experienced pulmonology and cardiology teams work together to improve patient outcomes through:

  • Coordinated treatment plans
  • Multi-disciplinary case management

Program participants benefit from MaineHealth experts in:

  • Pulmonary medicine – pulmonary disease with sub specialties in pulmonary hypertension and interstitial lung disease
  • Cardiovascular medicine – cardiac disease, heart failure and transplant cardiology 
  • Interventional cardiology – non-surgical procedures and imaging diagnostics using small catheters 
  • Diagnostic imaging – non-surgical imaging services such as X-Ray, computed tomography, echocardiogram and stress testing

Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic

The Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic provides long term treatment for patients with PH. Patients are seen by a multidisciplinary team and receive personalized treatment plans focused on minimizing the symptoms of this chronic cardiovascular condition.

Complex Dyspnea Clinic

The Complex Dyspnea Clinic provides multidisciplinary evaluation and diagnostic services for patients experiencing shortness of breath with an unknown cause. After diagnosis, patients return to their referring provider, or a recommended specialist, for ongoing management and treatment.

For patients with unexplained dyspnea, or a diagnosis that does not explain the severity of their dyspnea, MaineHealth recommends:

  • Echocardiogram with bubble study
  • Pulmonary function test
  • Chest x-ray
  • Lab testing (CBC, CMP, NT Pro, BNP)
  • Stress test/ischemis evaluation
  • Coronary angiography (if indicated)
