What is Internal Medicine?

Primary care providers may specialize in internal medicine or family medicine. Internal medicine physicians go through training that focuses on adults. They specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and management of disease and chronic conditions.

Internal medicine encompasses the care of patients 18 and older, whether they are healthy or sick. Internal medicine specialists are also called internists. They are primary care doctors recognized for their expertise in diagnosing and treating chronic illness, and working to promote health and prevent disease. Their responsibilities include health maintenance and disease screening, diagnosis and care of acute and chronic medical conditions, and management of patients with multiple complex medical problems.

Internists may focus their practice on general internal medicine. Others may have additional training, with sub-specialties in specific areas, including:

  • Allergy and immunology
  • Cardiology
