Trusted partners on your road to recovery

The rehabilitation medicine clinic provides high-quality care to neurology patients of all ages. Our multi-disciplinary, patient-centered program focuses on personalized treatment plans that maximize each patient’s independence and quality of life. From early inpatient interventions to post-discharge rehabilitation services, we will work with you to:

  • Regain movement, strength and endurance
  • Increase independence with activities of daily living
  • Train and educate caregivers, if needed

Early inpatient interventions

Early intervention is essential to achieving the best possible results for neurology patients. Research has shown that long-term outcomes improve when neuro-rehabilitation therapy begins as soon as possible. That’s why we are home to the largest team of inpatient physical, occupational and speech therapists in the state - including certified stroke and brain injury specialists.

Consultation and treatment begins within 24 hours of hospital admission - even if you are still sedated in our intensive care unit - to prevent contractures and to optimize joint and muscle functions. When you are ready to leave the hospital, you will be in the best possible position to begin the next step in your recovery. Your  rehab care team will develop a personalized treatment plan for your ongoing neuro-rehabilitation. Depending on your condition, you may be referred on to a:

  • Acute inpatient rehabilitation center
  • Skilled nursing facility
  • Home health agency
  • Outpatient rehabilitation clinic

Depending on your condition, the MMC rehab care team may recommend a skilled nursing facility (SNF) for the next step of your care. At a SNF you will receive medical care as well as neuro-rehabilitation services specific to your unique needs.

If you have made good progress during your inpatient stay, you may be discharged with a plan for ongoing care at by a home health agency such as MaineHealth Health Care at Home. You will receive in-home therapy services specific to your rehab needs.

If you are able to drive or have transportation support, we may recommend outpatient therapy services instead. In either case, your care will be managed by a physician who develops a personalized treatment plan and monitors your progress.
