MaineHealth is building a healthier future for our patients, visitors and care team members. The Malone Family Tower (MFT) at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland is our new home for cardiac and cardiovascular clinical excellence. The MFT opening is the final step in a multi-year expansion and modernization project that began in 2016. The project has:
- Increased access to inpatient and outpatient care
- Advanced our cardiovascular care capacity
- Streamlined the patient arrival experience
- Improved sustainability measures
- Enhanced the work environment for care team members
The tower features 96 private patient rooms, a 40-bed pre/post operation area, 19 new OR and procedure rooms and a significantly expanded sterile processing department facility.

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland performs more cardiac and cardiovascular procedures annually than anywhere else in the state.
- 1200 - 1300 open heart surgeries
- 5000 catheter-based procedures
- 600 ablations
The MFT advances our cardiovascular capacity and patient experience - from common procedures to the most complex surgeries and acute conditions.

The MFT has been sustainably designed to attain LEED Silver Certification - with recycled construction materials, highly-efficient mechanical operations and more:
- Reduced energy demand across all systems, lowering MHMMCP’s carbon footprint
- Material selections focused on human health
- Green roof for improved storm water runoff and reduced heat island effect

The MFT supports our care team with higher quality facilities and better spaces for collaborative care, education and research.
- Mechanical systems designed for comfort, efficiency and air quality
- Designed for thermal comfort, daylight, views and acoustics
- Improved ergonomics to support care team members
- Flexible design to support multiple clinical programs
- Improved sterile processing department and workflow
