I felt like the residents were well supported and people were generally quite happy in Maine and at Maine Med. Chose MMC because I thought it would allow be to be the best version of myself and the best clinician I could be. - Why MaineHealth Maine Medical Center?I did rotations at MHMMC as a 4th year medical student and loved everything about the program and hospital. I wanted to be at a large academic medical center that still had a small community feel and MHMMC is just that. I loved how close-knit and down-to-earth the residents, attendings and staff members were and the great learning environment it fostered. There are also really unique rural medicine opportunities. And of course Portland is such an amazing place to live with unlimited access to skiing, hiking, beaches and amazing restaurants/breweries. You can't beat going from the hospital to the beach in 10 minutes!

The large international population was appealing with the exposure and training that comes along with it. I also knew I didn't want a big city but more of a funky, small-town vibe.

- Why MaineHealth Maine Medical Center?Definitely the people - everyone who works here is so down to earth! Mentors and advisors are invested in your education but also in your passions outside of the hospital and making sure you have time for life outside medicine. Also, MHMMC is a blend of community hospital and academic center which I thought would be a great experience for residency. Lastly, Portland is such a fun city - it's a short drive to mountains and right on the ocean and has a great restaurant and brewery scene!

- Favorite place in MaineBiddeford Pool! My grandma has been renting the same house there for Labor Day weekend for my entire (and basically my father’s entire) life. Southern Maine has always been a super cherished place for me, so it's amazing that I now get to call it home.
- Medical interestsHematology/Oncology, Palliative Care, Hospitalist Medicine, Medical Education
- What did you do before medical school?I spent two gap years working at a clinical genomics company in Baltimore, MD. Think send-out genetic testing; we would take patient’s solid tumor samples, extract and sequence their tumor DNA, and then make recommendations for targeted therapies based on their mutations.
- Best/worst jobI grew up lifeguarding at a local pool for my summer job; was truly both the best and worst of times. Pros included teaching kids how to swim, working with my friends, and being outside all day. Cons included sunburns, having to think about pool chemistry, and the occasional AFR (accidental fecal release).
- Why MaineHealth Maine Medical Center?Because it offers a close-knit community of people providing outstanding medical training in a place where I have access to so SO many of the hobbies/friends/family that I hold dear.

- Favorite restaurant in PortlandDuring med school I listened to the local Portland Radio station 98.9 WCLZ. Great tunes with the benefit of local news. They released the names of ten Maine chefs and restaurants named semifinalists in the 2024 James Beard Award. I’ve used it to create a bucket list of places that I haven’t tried yet: Atsuko Fujimoto of Norimoto Bakery, Celia Bruns of Artemisia Cafe, Ian Driscoll of Bar Futo, Valerie Goldman of The Honey Paw, and Jake Stevens of Leeward are a few on the list!
- Favorite place in MaineKezar Lake
- Medical interestsAs a typical future Med-Peds physician, my interests are pluripotent. I’m currently leaning towards inpatient medicine, with interests in infectious disease, public health, complex care, and medical education. As a former track athlete, I’ve always had an interest in youth athletes, adaptive sports, adolescent medicine, nutrition, and preventative medicine as well.
- Favorite weekend destinationLeaf peeping hikes, trail running, year round beach walks, and farmers markets.

- What did you do before medical school?I took several gap years. I was an immunology wet lab scientist, a clinical trial coordinator, and an ER tech. I also worked at a yoga studio, got my 500hr YTT, and did some volunteering with youth in the Boston community.
- Best/worst jobBest Job - RI Beach lifeguard in the summers during college and competing in the Lifeguard Games. It's like the local Olympics where each beach competes in a series of physical skills tests (think beach sprints, mile run, swims, rowing, and tug of war) for the chance to win the title and trophy! Worst Job - I’m a microbiology nerd and loved the cognitive aspects of wet lab research…but maybe not the smells. In college I worked in a biochemistry lab studying penicillin binding proteins and e.coli cell division and our cultures were pretty stinky.
- Why MaineHealth Maine Medical Center?I spent a great deal of my childhood in Maine. It wasn’t just “vacation land” but a place where my siblings, cousins, and family friends engaged in imagination and play, connected with nature, and played endlessly outside without the distractions of technology. I was grateful for the opportunity to study medicine at UNECOM, surrounded by the beauty of Maine and its salt of the earth people. After rotating at Maine Medical Center, I found the environment to be incredibly collaborative and supportive, with mentors who are genuinely interested in your growth and wellbeing. Training at Maine Medical Center is a dream come true.

- Why MaineHealth Maine Medical Center?MaineHealth offers robust academic and clinical training that will best prepare me for my career as an internist/rural clinician. It boasts outstanding global health opportunities through the Pebble Street Learning Collaborative and Dr. Diamond-Falk’s commitment to East Africa. I was also impressed with the many rural/community clinics in Windham, Brunswick, and York. The entire community seems very family-friendly and personal-growth-oriented which is key at this stage of training. I’m also told that Marissa’s garden produce is a MUST!
