Medical Assistant Training

MaineHealth Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Programs in Southern, Midcoast, and Western Maine

MaineHealth partners with both Southern Maine Community College and York County Community College to offer accelerated 9-month, paid Medical Assistant Apprenticeship programs. Learning modules include Medical Office Administration, Billing and Coding, Medical Terminology and Clinical Procedures I and II and more. Upon completion, students receive a certificate, are eligible for 27-30 college credits at the Community College level, are prepared to sit for certification exam and can be hired into the Medical Assistant position. Apprentices are paid $17.00 an hour for 20 hours a week of clinical time.  Medical Assistants completing the program and hired into placements are required to work at a MaineHealth practice for a minimum of 12 months after training program completion.

After completion of the program and passing of the certification exam, Medical Assistants who are hired into placements are paid $20.60 per hour. 

Medical Assistant Registered Apprenticeship Program offered by Southern Maine Community College

Serves apprentices hired by Maine Medical Center, Maine Medical Partners, MidCoast-Parkview Hospital, and Western Maine Health.

  • 9-months long
  • Part-time, paid clinical apprenticeship (20 hours per week)
  • Cohorts start in Summer, Fall, and Winter
  • Classes meet from 8am-5pm one day per week at Southern Maine Community College’s South Portland campus or midcoast campus in Brunswick (depending on cohort/calendar start) for 9 months.  In addition to class time, clinical apprenticeship is performed for 20 hours a week
  • Additional time needs to be dedicated for studying and review of course materials
  • Registered Apprenticeship with the Maine Department of Labor

Admissions and Application Requirements:

  • High school diploma, GED, or Hi-Set from U.S-accredited institution

If your high school diploma is from a non-US institution, you must submit English language proficiency scores.  Minimum English Accuplacer score of 500 (Minimum of 230 on both Reading and Writing) or CASAS English score of 240

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Authorization to work in the United States
  • MaineHealth Application for Employment as Medical Assistant Apprentice
  • Application for admission to Southern Maine Community College
  • Resident of Maine
  • Reference check required for internal MaineHealth candidates only
  • Job Interview (if selected) 

Medical Assistant Registered Apprenticeship Program offered by York County Community College

Serves apprentices hired by Southern Maine Health Care.

  • 9-months long
  • Paid, part-time apprenticeship (20 hours per week)
  • Cohorts start in August and February
  • In-person classes meet every Wednesday either 9am-12:30pm or 1pm-4:30pm (depending on cohort start) at York County Community College in Wells.  In addition to in-person class attendance requirements, there are also class requirements online which may vary from week to week. The minimum total time students must commit to class attendance and coursework is 20 hours per week. In addition to class time, clinical apprenticeship is performed for 20 hours a week.
