Day Surgery | Outpatient Surgery

Surgery can be stressful for patients and their loved ones. At MaineHealth, our goal is to keep you comfortable, safe and well-informed.

What is outpatient surgery?

Outpatient surgery (also called day surgery) is a great option for generally healthy patients who need a minor procedure. Outpatient surgery does not require an overnight hospital stay. Patients usually stay in the hospital for several hours to recover and can leave by the end of the day.

Pre-anesthesia screening

If anesthesia is recommended, your doctor will ask you to meet with an anesthesia and pre-operative nurses before your surgery. The nurses will ask about medications, allergies and other health problems. Tell the nurses if you are currently on a blood thinner or if you are feeling ill.

Drain Care Post-Surgery

A surgical drain helps to get rid of fluid that may collect around the site after your operation. Here's how to care for the drain and prevent infections.
