John G Carson

I completed my medical school at the University of Texas, Houston Health Science Center, followed by a General Surgery residency at the University of California, Irvine and vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Chicago. Prior to moving to Maine, I served as an Associate Professor of Surgery for the University of California Davis School of Medicine. At the University of California, and held the position of Program Director for the Vascular Surgery Residency Program as well as Chief of Vascular Surgery for the Sacramento Department of Veterans Affairs. I joined the faculty at Maine Medical Center in 2023. I am currently a Professor of Surgery for the University of New England and also serve as the Medical Director of the non-invasive vascular laboratories at both Maine Medical Center in Portland and St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston.

My interests in vascular surgery include minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of complex arterial disorders and limb preservation, surgical management of carotid disease including carotid stenting, complex aortic pathology, and venous insufficiency. I believe in complete, patient centered treatment and education of complex vascular disorders. Lifestyle modification and family teaching are an integral part of therapy goals. Special interests include surgical resident and medical student education and research.

Interests outside of work include spending time with my family, New England activities such as skiing, hiking and biking. I also enjoy cooking and working as a sommelier in my spare time.
