Meet Hagen | MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children's Hospital

A smiling, determined young boy climbing on an indoor rock-climbing wall

Hagen was just 18 months old when he was diagnosed with medulloblastoma. His mom Brittney explains, “No parent ever imagines hearing the words ‘your child has cancer.’ Everything changes in that moment and focus shifts 100% to your child and the unknown journey ahead. Being told to plan to spend the next eight-plus months mainly at MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (MHBBCH) seemed crazy at the time, but it was true. MHBBCH became our second home. The team of doctors, nurses and child life specialists became our second family.”

Hagen persevered through six rounds of chemo, eight MRI’s, five emergency department visits, 12 hospital admissions (more than 100 days hospitalized), 10 days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a stem cell transplant, and more. But today, we’re happy to celebrate that four-year-old Hagen is cancer free and loves to spend his winters skiing!
