Annie was diagnosed before birth with a heart condition called transposition of the great arteries. It was then that her parents, Rachel and Richard, learned that she would need surgery. Rachel explains “We originally assumed we would have to go out of state for Annie’s care, however we were informed that a new, amazing surgeon, Dr. Ziyad Binsalamah, had just relaunched the cardiac program and MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital could do her surgery right here.”
At three days old, Annie underwent a full bypass surgery utilizing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and spent a total of 22 days in the hospital. But to see 20-month-old Annie running around today, you’d never know it! Annie’s surgery was a success, and outside of yearly check-ups with her cardiologist, she’s expected to live a normal life. She loves reading books, visiting her Grammy’s chickens and her big sister!
