Meet Darren & Bennett | MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children's Hospital

Two young boys standing together in a hallway

When eight-month-old Darren developed RSV and pneumonia, he needed a higher level of care than his local hospital could provide. Darren was transferred by ambulance to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (MHBBCH). His parents, Ryan and Samantha, were scared, but Samantha remembers the amazing PICU staff. “Not only did they reassure us that our baby boy was in the best hands, but they cared for us as if we were their patients too,” said Samantha.

A couple of years later, Darren's brother Bennett was born early, at 36 weeks, and was having trouble breathing. Ryan and Samantha were given the choice of transferring to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at MHBBCH or to Boston. They chose MHBBCH because of the wonderful care Darren had received. Today, both brothers are thriving. They love dancing and performing and are looking forward to playing soccer in the spring!
