Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: Maine Med was the perfect mix between community hospital and academic medical center. The residency and fellowship programs are small enough that you get to know everyone, but the patient population offers a lot of variety and the attendings are always happy to teach. The learning environment is supportive, and residents are genuinely happy here. Between my awesome co-residents, my wonderful patients, and the food and culture of Portland, I couldn’t have chosen a better place to train!

Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: My favorite thing about the MMC MedPeds program is the people! We have awesome residents who are known as some of the smartest and best residents in the hospital. Not only are they great people to work with, but they are also my favorite people to hang out with outside of work too. We are lucky to have the best program coordinator and an extremely supportive program director and associate program director as well!

Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: The food landscape is awesome! Loved being able to walk or bike to work. Colleagues, mentors and teaching in a professional and supportive environment. Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: Portland was an ideal place for me to both train as well and start my family (I had two young children when going through residency). It was a wonderful town to live in with lots to do- beautiful outdoors, plenty of good food, a walkable city! It had a nice combination of both being the largest hospital in Maine which gave me exposure to lots of pathology while also having a community family feel. My co-residents were wonderful physicians and lifelong friends.

Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: I loved the sense of camaraderie among the Med/Peds residents. Being a part of the Med/Peds program at Maine Med felt like having a second family, which I was very grateful for as I made my way through the busy and rigorous 4 years of training. The program administration was also extremely invested in the success of each resident, always seeking feedback and making necessary changes to ensure that residents were getting what they needed in their training. Also, equally important as the excellent medical training was the great quality of life I was able to have when I was outside of the hospital. Living in Portland during residency meant that there was never a shortage of amazing restaurants, activities, or natural scenery to enjoy when I had free time. I feel very lucky to have been able to complete my training at Maine Med, and the training I received has left me feeling well-prepared to begin the next phase of my career.

Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: My favorite thing about the Med-Peds program at MMC is the culture. Residency is a challenging 4 years and it was important to me to train in a place where people were happy. I'm pretty sure that all med-peds programs across the country offer similarly good clinical experience, but what type of culture do you want to be a part of and work in? For me, that was a tight-knit group of people who were excited about their work and were fun to be around. Not to mention a diverse city, located on the ocean, close to nature. I liked it so much that I stayed as a combined hospitalist!

Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: The people, who cushioned, at key times, the inevitable challenges of residency. It is hard to reflect on residency in a balanced way because it only happens once...but I relished the work of intern year, the friendships, mentorship, and closeness with attending physicians and staff; the challenges of early leadership in a system that allowed junior residents to rise and meet challenges, and the subsequent joys of testing and refining clinical skills, teaching, and filling the gaps during the later years. In retrospect, the overall environment was a good fit - not hierarchical, casual but professional, open to inquiry and rigorous, without being pedantically academic for show. The hospital leadership was accessible and listened to the residency programs, inviting involvement in improvement and patient safety. Since leaving, there has been no shortage of charged nostalgia - missing peers, faculty, and patients - as it should be. But I also took away what I needed to continue the work of being a sound, thoughtful physician in a complex era for healthcare.

Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: The MMC Med-Peds program wasn't so much created as grown. During my time in the program collaboration and resident input were valued highly and drove many components of the program forward. Largely, I felt like a member of the team responsible for my training experience in a way that was very empowering. The residents themselves definitely are the main reason I loved this program -- they were consistently a supportive, close-knit, quirky and hilarious group throughout my four-years. Another favorite thing is MMC itself, which is truly a hidden gem of the medical training world. MMC is small enough that you not only work directly with the attendings, but also have ample opportunity to build relationships with faculty in a way that is positive both for career development and sense of community. Lastly, as stated by many other graduates, it is rare to train at both the primary community hospital and only academic center for an entire state. Come here and be well trained.

Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: My favorite thing about the Med-Peds program was definitely the residents themselves. There is a strong sense of pride and community within the close knit family the program. My co-residents were excellent friends, teachers and counselors and made the challenging aspects of training more fun than they otherwise would have been.

Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: I chose Maine Med because I felt like it was a wonderful secret. It is a strong academic program in a community setting. We are small enough to feel a camaraderie much like family (among all members on the team) but big enough to get the diverse exposure and case load necessary in residency. The institution is dedicated to quality improvement and it shows in how much people enjoy working here. Portland offers the best quality of life on the East coast, I think, and it's also my childhood home. I liked it so much, I'm here to stay as an adult hospitalist.

Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: In one word: Balance. Med-peds residency packs a lot of requirements into a short amount of time, and it’s really challenging to train well-rounded physicians while also supporting residents’ individual interests and protecting their work-life balance. Somehow, though, our leadership makes it happen. They work tirelessly to coordinate a diverse and complex curriculum and then bend over backwards to rearrange it in order to maintain flexibility for the residents. I can’t count the number of times my requests were met with “let’s figure out how to make this work” rather than “I don’t think we can do that”. Through it all, the faculty and administration also really encouraged me to have a life outside the residency. They genuinely cared about my well-being and they worked hard to help me maintain a realistic balance between my work-life and personal-life.

Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: I instinctively think of the word family as I reflect on my time in the med/peds program. I was able to count on my fellow residents, attendings and administrative staff whenever I needed them. I also knew they were doing everything possible to make sure I was getting the best education. It was also great to be a part of a somewhat smaller program where I knew all of the attendings and residents and they all knew me. This allowed me some flexibility to get the procedures I wanted and to work with the specialists in pediatric cardiology as this was my primary interest. I also could not have asked for a better place to live. I always tell people Maine is a hidden gem. The food is incredible, the outdoor activities are endless and it's all so accessible. It was an all-around great experience and despite being thankful to be done with that phase of my career, I would not have wanted to do it any place else!

Favorite Things about MMC's Med-Peds Program: The Med-Peds program at MMC was the best choice I could have made when deciding on where to go for residency. In addition to getting the best of both worlds in two very strong categorical programs, I've learned valuable lessons about medicine and about life. I've made great friends who I know will last a lifetime and I can't imagine being in any other place but Maine with my family. I hope to continue to play a small part in the program now as an attending and help new interns and residents achieve the same.

Favorite Things about MMC's Med-Peds Program: The Med-Peds program at MMC is distinctive from other programs in other hospitals and even other programs within MMC. We have a strong Med-Peds identity and cohesiveness, which is due to the strong leadership and fierce advocacy of our administrative staff and program directors. We are both integrated into and help push the categorical programs to improve patient care and resident well-being thanks to our unique perspective. We learn to practice in a diverse urban area at a tertiary care center as well as a rural community practice, sometimes on the same day! Most of all, I feel fortunate to have trained with such excellent colleagues and learned from excellent teaching attendings.

Favorite Things about MMC's Med-Peds Program: The people! Everyone from our Program Director and Program Coordinator to the attendings to the support staff in clinic and on the floors are extremely supportive and committed to ensuring residents have the best educational opportunities possible and help residents achieve individual goals, maximizing the program's flexibility to fit with a resident's personal interests and prepare them for their careers after residency. Also, everyone is willing to consider change - if you bring an idea, it will be seriously considered! Some examples: attendings are open to trying new ways to round. Our annual med-peds retreats continue to change based on input from residents.

Favorite Things about MMC's Med-Peds Program: Medicine and pediatrics all in one hospital - you don't have to go between two separate hospitals. This allows you to see your counterparts while you are on medicine and they are on pediatrics and vice versa. Every attending knew me and I knew them and I knew almost every resident in the hospital. You work with all of them closely. There are no pediatric fellows - I really wanted this in my training and have benefited greatly from this. I had done more procedures in my training at MMC than most of the PICU fellows at my current hospital have done during their first two years of training.
