Babies with neurological issues need highly-specialized care. Maine Medical Center (MMC) offers the only neonatal neurology program in Northern New England, outside of Boston. Our multidisciplinary team of experts provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for:
- Pregnant mothers with fetuses affected by neurological conditions
- Newborns with neurological conditions who need acute inpatient care
- Babies with neurological conditions who need inpatient or intensive care
We are regional and national leaders in the use of telemedicine to deliver those services to rural community hospitals in Maine and New Hampshire. We also participate in industry-funded clinical trials and investigator-initiated research to continually improve our neonatal neurology services.

Our team treats a wide range of neonatal neurological conditions such as:
Brain malformations:
- Holoprosencephaly
- Schizencephaly
- Lissencephaly
- Pachygyria
- Polymicrogyria
- Periventricular nodular heterotopia
- Other migrational disorders
- Focal cortical dysplasias
- Agenesis or dysgenesis of the corpus callosum
- Dandy-Walker malformation and other malformations of the posterior fossa
- Congenital hydrocephalus, e.g., due toaqueductal stenosis
Congenital infections:
- Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection
- Congenital toxoplasmosis
- Congenital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection
- Congenital rubella syndrome
- Other congenital infections, such as:
- Syphilis

Conditions acquired by newborns and young infants:
- Hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and treatment with therapeutic hypothermia
- Newborn seizures
- Newborn stroke
- Hyperbilirubinemia affecting the brain
- Hemorrhage (bleeding) in the brain
- Germinal matrix hemorrhage (GMH), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH)
- Hydrocephalus, including posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus, benign external hydrocephalus
- Meningitis
- Encephalitis
- Periventricular leukomalacia or white matter injury
- Brachial plexus palsy (Erb’s palsy)
- Neurological follow-up of children who receive ECMO

- Comprehensive evaluations
- Critical care
- Treatment plans
- Electroencephalogram (EEG): a study that monitors the brain activity for seizures and other characteristics
- Therapeutic hypothermia: a neuroprotective treatment for a brain that may have signs of injury at birth
- Brain scans/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Serial neurological exams
- Brain ultrasound interpretation

Spina Bifida
The MMC spina bifida program evaluates and makes recommendations for children with spina bifida - a congenital defect of the spine.
Cerebral Palsy
Maine Medical Center offers the only multi-disciplinary cerebral palsy clinic for children in Maine. Cerebral palsy is a disorder that can affect movement, posture and balance.
