MMC Campus Replacement & Modernization Project
Work on Maine Medical Center’s largest modernization and replacement project in history began in May 2018. This patient-focused initiative will enable Maine’s largest hospital to meet its most urgent health care needs well into the future.
The project has four major components:
- The addition of two patient care floors with 64 new oncology patient rooms to the Coulombe Family Tower, topped by the new Sisters Heliport, and addition of three levels to the visitor parking garage for an additional 225 parking spaces. (Completed in December 2019)
- The construction of a new, 108,000-square-foot Medical Office Building at the Scarborough Campus to bring together Maine Medical Partners’ neuroscience; ear, nose and throat; and vascular surgery practices into one regional, state-of-the-art center for specialty care. (Completed in May 2021)
- The complete transformation of the Congress Street corridor with the demolition of a 45-year-old parking garage and construction of a brand-new, six-story cardiovascular building and medical center entrance (Expected Completion 2023)
- Construction of a modern and convenient employee garage on nearby St. John Street (Completed in January 2020)
Altogether, the $536 million project will create 128 new private patient rooms and add 19 procedure rooms for surgeries and other complex treatments. The completed facilities have already begun benefiting patients near and far. The placement of the Sisters Heliport on the same building housing the Emergency Department has shaved critical time from the trips trauma patients take to get emergency treatment. And, the additional patient rooms in the Coulombe Family Tower provided the flexibility vital to MMC’s pandemic response.
