Wound Care and Ostomy Care at Home

At MaineHealth Care at Home, we provide the highest level of medical services for hard-to-heal wounds as well as ostomy care, including colostomy, ileostomy, fistulas and leaking tube/drain sites.

Our wound care nurses have been extensively trained in all aspects of wound management and ostomy care.

What is wound care and ostomy care at home?

Wound and ostomy care at home starts with a comprehensive evaluation to develop a home care program that includes:

  • Care plan developed in conjunction with you, your primary care physician, nurses, therapists, dietitians and diabetic educators

  • Evaluation, cleansing and medication for wounds

  • Ostomy and fistula management

  • Treatment of incontinence, including skin problems

Who receives wound care and ostomy care at home?

People who may be eligible for wound and ostomy care at home may have:

  • Mobility problems, or trouble getting around or leaving the house

  • Wound and ostomy problems that need advanced care

  • Leaking ostomies and fistulas

Will my insurance cover wound and ostomy care at home?

Talk to your primary care provider about requesting wound and ostomy care at home. You will need a referral from your provider. Medicare and many private insurers cover wound and ostomy care at home.
