SMHC 2020 Local Board

The Local Board oversee the care delivered in our communities and provide local input into decision-making. Local Boards are organized as committees of the MaineHealth Board and have an important role in our community, participating in quality oversight, oversight of local medical staffs, planning, budgeting and the hiring of key executives, local fundraising initiatives, among other duties.

The following individuals (pictured above) have been elected to the Southern Maine Health Care Board:

Nate Howell

Nate Howell
President

Nate joined SMHC in 2018 bringing more than 15 years of progressive executive leadership experience in national healthcare systems, most recently serving as President and CEO of North Star Health Alliance and Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, New York. He is a graduate of Colby College and received a MBA from Cornell University. Howell has strong ties to Maine. He was born at the former Goodall Hospital in Sanford and spent many summers at the family’s vacation home in Brunswick.

Aprile leadership

Patsy Aprile
Chief Operating Officer

Patsy, a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, has been working in health care for more than 30 years. She joined SMHC as SVP and Chief Operating Officer in 2014, prior to which she had served as President and CEO of Goodall Hospital since 2011 and Goodall’s Chief Operating Officer since 2005. Aprile received her undergraduate degree in Medical Technology from Colby-Sawyer College, and her Certificate in Health Administration and MBA from New Hampshire College. Aprile is the Chair of the Sanford Legacy Foundation Campaign, member of the Health Administration Program Advisory Committee and the American College of Healthcare Executives’ Personal Services & Finance Committee. 

Olsen leadership

Rick Olsen
Chief Financial Officer

Rick has more than 20 years of experience leading finance and operations in major healthcare and billing organizations. He joined SMHC as SVP & CFO in 2016, prior to which he served as Senior Director of Finance & Operations Management, Corporate Financial Planning and Associate Executive Director of Finance for the Northwell Health System in New York. Rick earned his bachelor’s degree in Management and International Business at New York University and received his MBA in Strategic Healthcare Management at Hofstra University. He serves on the Board of Directors for NorDx, on the MaineHealth Retirement Plan Committee, and the Maine Hospital Association Healthcare Finance Council. Rick is also a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and American College of Healthcare Executives.

Albaum leadership

Michael Albaum, MD
Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Albaum has over 20 years of health care experience. He earned his BS degree in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics from Yale University. He completed his MD Degree, Internal Medicine Residency, and Chief Residency at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After moving to Maine in 1995 he joined PrimeCare PA Internal Medicine practice in Kennebunk and Biddeford, and became PrimeCare’s Medical Director. In 2008 when PrimeCare was acquired by Southern Maine Medical Center, he was appointed Chief Medical Officer and continues in that role following SMMC’s merger with Goodall Hospital to form Southern Maine Health Care. He served as Board Chair for the MaineHealth Accountable Care Organization from 2011-2019. Dr. Albaum has dedicated his career to promoting access to high quality health care in the communities served by SMHC. 

Jennifer Schmitz, MSN, CEN, CPEN, CNML, EMT-P, NE-BC, FNP-C
Interim Chief Nursing Officer

Jennifer has been a registered nurse for nearly 20 years and began her career at Southern Maine Health Care in 2002 as a nurse in the emergency department. She has held a variety of positions including staff nurse, charge nurse, nurse educator, nurse manager/director and most recently, as a senior director of hospital services. Jennifer earned her associate degree in paramedicine from Southern Maine Community College, a BS in Nursing from the University of Southern Maine, and MS in Family Nurse Practitioner from Husson University in Bangor. Jennifer recently completed a post-master’s certificate program through Cornell University in high performance & executive leadership. She is a certified emergency nurse, certified pediatric emergency nurse, certified nurse manager and leader, board certified nurse executive and board certified family nurse practitioner. She is currently serving on the national Emergency Nurses Association Board of Directors.

Christopher Jones
Regional Chief Information Officer

Chris has worked in Information Technology (IT) healthcare for over 20 years. He joined MaineHealth in 2009 and took on the role of Regional Chief Information Officer for Southern Maine Health Care in 2019. He is also the Regional Chief Information Officer for Behavioral Health across the MaineHealth system. Chris joined us from Sharp Healthcare in San Diego where he held several management roles in Information Technology. Chris is certified in many areas of IT and holds a Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma.

Nicolle Baade, MHA
Sr. Director, Primary Care & Medical Specialties Operations

Nicolle has worked in healthcare operations for over 15 years. She began her career at Central Maine Healthcare in Lewiston, Maine, leading primary care and medical specialty clinics before overseeing the system’s business development and contracting operations. In 2017, Nicolle joined Southern Maine Health Care as the director of primary care operations and assumed the role of senior director in 2019. She received a Master’s in Healthcare Administration at American Intercontinental University and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Health Administration at the University of Phoenix.

Lisa Drew

Lisa Drew
Senior Director, Human Resources

Lisa has served as the Senior Director for Human Resources at SMHC since 2017 after serving as Senior Director of Talent Acquisition at MaineHealth and VP for Human Resources at LincolnHealth. Lisa holds a BA in Sociology from Bates College, is certified as a Lean recruiter and appreciative inquiry facilitator and holds her PHR certification. 

Julie Grosvenor, MD
Associate Chief Medical Officer, Senior Medical Director, Surgical & Procedural Services

Julie is an orthopedic surgeon who came to Maine after visiting for vacation during her residency. She started practice at the former Goodall Hospital in Sanford, took on the role of Chief Medical Officer and then Associate Chief Medical Officer when Goodall and Southern Maine Health Care merged in 2014. She has a BS in Exercise Science from University of Iowa and earned her MD from Washington University in St Louis. She completed her residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at The George Washington University in Washington DC. Julie took on the role of Senior Medical Director for Surgical & Procedural Services in 2019.

Keiler leadership

Susan Keiler
Vice President, Strategic Development

Susan began her career in health care as a clinician before moving into management roles. She joined SMHC in 2016 after leading physician networks and then serving as the local system Chief Operating Officer at St. Mary's Health System in Lewiston for 16 years. Susan graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in physical therapy and received her master's degree in health administration from the University of New Hampshire. Susan is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, and is on the Board of Directors for the Southern Maine Area Agency on Aging.

Allison Kenty

Allison Kenty
Director, Communications and Public Affairs

Allison has worked in healthcare marketing and communications for over 15 years. She began her career at Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge MA after graduating from Saint Anselm College with a BA in English & Communications. She then went onto work at Inova Health System in Northern Virginia in Marketing and PR roles for 7 years. After moving to Maine in 2015, Allison worked as the Director of Marketing and Communications at HealthInfoNet before taking the role as the Communications and Public Affairs Director at Southern Maine Health Care in 2018. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Biddeford Saco Chamber of Commerce.

Phil Kowash, MD
Senior Medical Director, Primary Care & Medical Specialties

Dr. Kowash has practiced in the Saco community for over 20 years. He completed a BS in Microbiology from the University of Idaho and an MD degree from the University of Washington. He completed a residency in Family Medicine at Maine Medical Center, and then settled in Saco to practice Family Medicine. Dr. Kowash has been developing his leadership skills over the past 8 years assuming leadership positions within SMHC and MaineHealth.

Joanne Reid
Vice President, Retail Services

Joanne has over 25 years of senior management experience including facilitating enterprise strategic planning and leading ambulatory practices and services, physician hospital organization, system business development and designing/implementing/managing operational improvement programs. She earned her Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Administration from the University of San Francisco and her BA in Physical Therapy from the University of Lowell. She joined Southern Maine Health Care in 2019 coming from The Queens Health Systems in Honolulu, HI.

Jordan S. Peck, PhD
Vice President of Physician Practice Operations

Jordan is a versatile healthcare leader with expertise in systems redesign, strategic planning, process improvement, and healthcare systems reengineering. Jordan holds a PhD and MS in Engineering Systems from MIT where he focused on the design and optimization of Healthcare Delivery systems. Jordan also holds a BA in Physics and BS in Mechanical Engineering from Binghamton University and a Masters Certificate in Healthcare Leadership from Cornell University. Jordan joined MaineHealth to lead the Operational Excellence program. Jordan serves as a faculty member with Harvard University and the University of New Hampshire’s Physician Leadership Development programs.

Wes Pooler
Vice President, Support Services

Wes has over 10 years of master facilities and strategic planning experience, with an extensive background in sustainability advancements. He has proven success with developing high-performing teams in Facilities, Food & Nutrition Services, Environmental Services, Laundry, Bio-Medical Engineering, Safety, and Security departments. Wes holds an MBA from Thomas College and a Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science from Maine Maritime Academy. He is also hold the credentials of Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager (CHFM) and Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC) and was named Engineer of the Year by the New England Healthcare Engineers’ Society in 2017. Wes joined Southern Maine Health Care in 2018.

Andrew Powell, MD
Senior Medical Director, Hospital Services

Dr. Powell has been an emergency physician in the southern Maine community for over 14 years. He earned his BS in Biochemistry from Indiana University. He completed his MD degree at Indiana University and Emergency Medicine residency training at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He moved to Maine in 2006 and practiced as an Emergency Physician at Goodall Hospital. He became the Medical Director of Emergency Services in 2011 and continued this role through the merger of Goodall Hospital and Southern Maine Medical Center to form Southern Maine Health Care. He was appointed Senior Medical Director of Hospital Services in 2019.

Helen Troy

Helen Troy, RN, MS, CPHQ, CCM
Vice President, Quality & Safety

Helen has a distinguished track record at SMHC serving in leadership roles for Quality and Case Management since 2000 and is a Certified Professional in Health Care Quality. Helen earned her Masters of Science in Healthcare Management and Administration from New England College in Henniker, NH and has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of New England in Biddeford, ME. Helen also is a Green Belt in Lean Six Sigma. She is a member of the American College of Health Care Executives, National Association for Healthcare Quality and The Commission for Case Managers. She also serves on the Board of Directors for The Center in Kennebunk Maine.
