Junior Volunteers

Thank you for your interest in the Junior Volunteer Program at Maine Medical Center! The Junior Volunteer program offers high school students an opportunity to gain experience in a healthcare setting while learning new skills and giving back to their community. Areas Junior Volunteers may serve in include: Retail Shops, Information Desk/Escort, Cafeteria, Mail Room, Admitting, Hospital Elder Life, and Clinical Patient Units.

Our Volunteer Program for summer 2021 which includes three distinct opportunities for Junior Volunteers (high school students between age 14 – 18) to volunteer their time and talents and accrue service hours during the summer.

All participants will:

  • be fully vaccinated
  • have completed at least one summer program prior to this summer
  • be at least 16 years old
  • commit to volunteer 1 full day each week (Monday – Friday) for the duration of the Program which will run from 6/28/21 – 8/20/21

Departmental participation will be confirmed and will include non-clinical and clinical areas as deemed appropriate.

All participants will:

  • have completed at least one summer program prior to this summer
  • be at least 16 years old
  • will commit to volunteer 1 full day each week (Monday – Saturday) for the duration of the Program which will run from 6/28/21 – 8/20/21

Orientation and Supervision for the clinic will be provided and supported by Clinic Staff in conjunction with Volunteer Services Staff.


All participants will:

  • be at least 14 years old
  • commit to volunteer for the duration of the Program which will run from 6/28/21 – 8/20/21

Leadership training: (15 hours)

  • Weekly meetings on Monday that include group discussion and activity, weekly reflection journal.
  • Workshops: Compassionate Interactions, Patient Experience 101.
  • Research a health care topic and report.

Career exploration: (10-16 hours)

  • 8-16 guest speakers (DEI, EVS, Nutrition, Security, Physician, Nurse, Radiology, Child Life, President or COO, HR, Spiritual Care, Interpreter Services, Administrator, Patient Experience, Customer Service/Operator, Quality & Safety). Required to attend 8 presentations.
  • Write an overview of the guest speaker presentations.

Service Projects: (25+ hours total for the summer)

  • Greeting Card Supplies for patients and staff
  • Survivor Support Ribbon Project (pink, red, yellow, etc.)
  • Care Kits for patients in cancer unit (lotion, socks, lip balm)
  • Care Kits for Brackett House
  • Staff Care Kits (adopt a unit – letters/care packages)
  • Signs of gratitude for Maine Medical Center and Maine Medical Partners
  • Holiday decorations for entry points
  • Holiday decorations for Brackett House

(JV will keep a log to record hours worked on project)
