Interests / Hobbies: Hiking, kayaking, gardening, cooking, playing guitar
Favorite place in Maine: Acadia National Park, specifically Precipice Trail/Champlain Mountain
Medical interests: Body Imaging, especially liver and prostate
Favorite weekend destination: Burlington, VT
Favorite Maine activity: Probably hiking, but kayaking is up there too
What did you do before medical school: Straight through college and business school - BS in chemical engineering, and MBA
Personal goals: Become a radiology residency program director
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: Worked construction between freshman and sophomore years of college.
Why Maine Medical Center: The atmosphere - there is something intangible about this place that is friendly and welcoming. At the same time, there is definitely a culture of excellence.
Celebrity I most resemble: No one, really. Jason Statham, maybe?
If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be a… paleontologist
Favorite restaurant in Portland: Empire

Daniel G. Hechavarria, MD
Hometown: Boston, Massachusetts
Undergraduate: Tufts University
Medical School: Tufts University
Interests / Hobbies: Projects/tinkering and all the outside things: camping, hiking, paddling, cycling, fishing
Favorite place in Maine: The Allagash (The river, not the Brewery. But the brewery is also pretty neat)
Medical interests: Interventional Radiology
Favorite weekend destination: White Mountains
Favorite Maine activity: Yard Sales. Definitely yard sales.
What did you do before medical school: I sold meat. I ran a small meat company which supplied Boston-area restaurants with high end meats
Why Maine Medical Center: MMC has the perfect mix of being a large and advanced hospital with broad catchment while maintaining a nurturing community-hospital feel.
Favorite restaurant in Portland: Ruskis

Erich Russell, DO
Hometown: Duanesburg, New York
Undergraduate: University of Vermont
Medical School: LECOM - Erie
Interests / Hobbies: I have way too many interests and hobbies that have only increased since I moved to Maine. In the winter I love to ski. It’s also the best time of year to explore the local restaurants/breweries etc when there are fewer tourists in town. In the summer there is an endless supply of outdoor activities and I love to golf, kayak, bike, explore the mountains with my wife and dog, and motorcycle up the beautiful coast.
Favorite place in Maine: Toss-up between Acadia and Rangeley Lake’s region for outdoor stuff. Otherwise, it’s finding somewhere new to explore in Portland.
Medical interests: I am most interested in Interventional Radiology and will be pursuing a fellowship in the specialty after residency. I am interested in innovative minimally invasive therapies for disease, including PAD and interventional oncology.
Favorite Maine activity: Being outside in the summer with a pot of lobsters, great friends, and delicious beer.
What did you do before medical school: I dabbled as a bicycle mechanic for a year or two.
Why Maine Medical Center: After interviewing all over during medical school I couldn’t find a place with happier people, better exposure to pathology, and a better track-record of training excellent physicians. As a current IR fellow applicant, I also recognize that the IR training and department is incredibly well developed, nationally recognized as a leader in the field, and filled with excellent mentors. There is no doubt that the IR department provides a top tier education if you are interested in the IR/DR pathway.

David Somsen, MD
CHIEF RESIDENT
Hometown: Yankton, SD
Undergraduate: University of Minnesota – Twin Cities
Medical School: University of South Dakota
Interests / Hobbies: Music, running, food, and beer
Favorite place in Maine: Monhegan Island
Medical interests: Body imaging, cross sectional imaging guided procedures
Favorite Maine activity: Literally anything as long as it’s summer
What did you do before medical school: Worked in a hospital as a perfusionist’s assistant, anesthesia tech, intra-aortic balloon pump operator, and autologous blood salvage machine (Cell Saver) operator
Personal goals: Lead a well-balanced life, never stop traveling, own a bar/restaurant, and be the expert and “go to” person regarding body imaging and image guided procedures at my future practice
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: Craziest job: working as a surgery tech at an animal research lab (which will remain nameless and I neither support nor condone it, etc etc etc)
Why Maine Medical Center: To be honest, my career path kind of just dropped Maine Med in my lap (I was a previous pediatrics resident who found a spot mid-year), but I couldn’t have been more fortunate. The experience and training I get here is unrivaled. Even though some may consider it “smaller,” this hospital sees everything, and the lack of fellows coupled with my dedicated attendings have prepared me to be a leader in my future job. That, and there is literally nothing better than summers in Maine.
If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be a… One of the guys with a guitar and an open guitar case downtown, but probably less talented
Favorite restaurant in Portland: Recent Honey Paw convert

Tom Carraway, MD
Hometown: Fredericksburg, VA
Undergraduate: University of Mary Washington
Medical School: Virginia Commonwealth University
Interests / Hobbies: Obscure history, local area exploration, attempting trail running, cats.
Favorite place in Maine: Camden Hills State Park a few hours up the coast is like all the best parts of Acadia without all the crowds
Medical interests: Exploring the cognitive biases found throughout the interpretation of medical imaging. The changes in accuracy (or not) in image interpretation with increased access to the medical record. Exploring ways to prevent overtesting/treating.
Favorite weekend destination: Heading up to the White Mountains and doing a random half day hike. Wild blueberry picking on the top of a mountain in the summer.
Favorite Maine activity: Wandering around Maine in any season. So much of Maine is poorly advertised, you really have to go off the beaten path to find the hidden treasures locals keep to themselves.
What did you do before medical school: EMT, Physical Therapy tech
Personal goals: Achieve the elusive work/life balance
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: Home appraiser at the height of the housing bubble.
Why Maine Medical Center: You’re going to be introduced to radiology during the day, but you truly learn on call when you’re by yourself and things get stressful. Small class sizes and plenty of call mean you’re going to come out of residency confident and able to tackle whatever comes your way. Why not do this in one of the best cities in the US?
If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be an… urban planner or I’d be one of those guys that gives bus tours of cities to parents and their bored/embarrassed teenage children.
Favorite restaurant in Portland: Oh No Café is not really a restaurant but you’re not going to get a better breakfast sandwich.

Why Maine Medical Center: Maine Medical Center is both a community hospital and the tertiary medical care center for an entire state! I chose Maine Med because of the acuity and diversity of the cases, the friendliness of the people, and the opportunity to start our family in the Portland area.

Craziest/Best/Worst Job: Craziest: Parade dancer at a dutch theme park. Best: Radiologist. Worst: Volunteering to hand pick rocks out of a parking lot in the name of tsunami volunteer relief
Personal Goals: To have humility. To always grow and not stagnate. To do well by my patients (yes, radiologists have patients).
Favorite Place in Maine: Any beach. I love riding my bike in the summertime.
Why Maine Medical Center: The people. I don’t believe in “work life balance”. Work shouldn’t be on one end of a scale, and life on the other. Work is a BIG part of life, so you better enjoy it. I love my work at Maine Medical Center because I love the people I work with and the care we provide. As a radiologist, I love that MMC has a categorical program, such that intern year is done at MMC. It makes me feel connected to the whole hospital - I know the docs in the ED, I know the docs on the floor, and I even know the patients. There is great satisfaction in a sense of continuity of care.
