Rotations are arranged in 2 week blocks. Fellows have one half day of protected didactic time each week. During the first year, fellows have two weeks for research/scholarly activity. During the second year, fellows will have one day per week to work on scholarly projects during their elective, maternal fetal medicine, pediatrics and outpatient podiatry blocks.
During a four week research block, fellows will have 50% of their time dedicated to scholarly activity and the rest to outpatient clinics. During the second year, fellows will complete a retina clinic and a wound care/podiatry block. Elective options include gender medicine, obesity medicine, maternal fetal medicine, and pediatric endocrinology.
Boot camp
Boot camp is a high-yield educational lecture and instructional series that occurs early in the first year of fellowship. It is aimed at acclimating new fellows to our fellowship program and to the care of MaineHealth diabetes and endocrinology patients. Topics covered include:
- Endocrine emergencies
- Pharmacology
- Insulin prescribing
- Insulin pumps
Academic half days
Academic half days will take place one afternoon per week. During each half-day session, we aim to engage fellows in a variety of educational formats with the goal of expanding knowledge and sharing ideas and experience.
Core curriculum lecture series
These will be engaging, interactive and disease-specific sessions delivered by our core faculty. Educators will be instructed to provide evidenced-based andragogy to create engaging and interactive educational sessions.
Case conference series
Fellows, paired with faculty mentors, present a patient case followed by a case-based discussion. These sessions integrate literature review and highlight evidence-based standards of care, encouraging fellows to connect clinical experiences with academic knowledge.
Journal club
To foster a commitment to life-long learning and appraisal of new research, our curriculum includes a monthly journal club presentation. Fellows will work with the faculty to choose relevant articles and frame a discussion by reviewing how the article fits in the current understanding of the disease, treatment or biology being discussed. The goals of this conference are to simultaneously:
- Review new studies
- Develop a framework to critically appraise the research using critical thinking and nuanced understanding of research design
- Generate excitement and interest in life-long learning
Monthly board review
This is a question-based interactive board review using ESAP and ABIM/ENDO board review materials, led by faculty and fellows.
Morbidity and mortality conference
To facilitate reflection, learning and in-depth analysis from cases with sub-optimal outcomes, fellows will be required to present at a morbidity and mortality conference. This setting will be a non-punitive, department-wide forum for fellows to perform root cause analysis on such cases.
Multi-disciplinary and inter-professional engagement will be encouraged as well as evidence-based approaches to improving future practice. Fellows will be paired with faculty to assist with choosing and presenting the case.
Endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism grand rounds
Grand rounds will be an opportunity to hear leading experts present cutting-edge research and updates in disease-specific areas.
Institutional didactics & well-being
In addition to endocrinology-specific conferences, MaineHealth offers quarterly, half-day, didactic sessions for all residents and fellows, as well as a comprehensive well-being program that supports professional and personal development.
