What is substance use disorder?
Substance use disorder (SUD) - also known as addiction - happens when your body and mind become dependent on a substance to function. This can happen with substances such as alcohol, opioids, stimulants, cannabis and tobacco. Many people do not believe they will be become addicted to the substances they use. Substance use disorder during pregnancy
One of the most important things you can do when you're pregnant is to avoid or reduce your use of alcohol and drugs. Even substances that are legal, such as tobacco and cannabis can have negative effects on your pregnancy and growing baby.
Substance use disorder can also affect you and your baby before and after birth. The best time to treat a substance use disorder is before you get pregnant. But sometimes, pregnancy is unexpected. If you learn that you are pregnant and need help quitting or reducing your use of these or other substances, we are here to help and there are resources to help you.*
