Course Descriptions

Basic Life Support in Obstetrics (BLSOTM) encourages a standardized team-based approach to managing both normal labor and obstetric emergencies.

Adapted from the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO®) program, BLSO is designed for pre-hospital care providers, emergency department personnel, medical and nursing students and non-delivering physicians.

The course format is a blended classroom, which allows learners to work at their own pace to complete the online course portion prior to the live course skills assessment and group testing portion.

Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO®) is an evidence-based, interprofessional, multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire pregnancy care team with skills to effectively manage obstetric emergencies.

This comprehensive course encourages a standardized team-based approach among physicians, residents, nurse midwives, registered nurses and other members of the pregnancy care team to improve patient safety and positively affect maternal outcomes.

This course includes online prework and in-person learning, and is appropriate for clinicians working on an obstetric setting.

This course focuses on correctly identifying and interpreting fetal heart rate patterns. Basic physiology is discussed in relation to how it effects maternal cardiac output and fetal heart rate.

This course is appropriate for team members with less than six months experience.

This course focuses on correlating fetal heart rate patterns to underlying physiologic influences, as well as tailoring assessments to identify issues within the oxygen pathway. The goal is accurate identification, interpretation and management of fetal heart rate patterns, in accordance with standard NICHD definitions, and best practice.

The course also focuses on strategies for utilizing communication and collaboration to improve safety and outcomes. Case review and clinical scenarios are used to apply knowledge. Attendees should have a solid foundational understanding of fetal monitoring components before attending this course.

These are virtual case reviews that include a collaborative discussion of the fetal hear rate tracing over the course of the case.  Discussion will focus on standardized language, clinical assessment, interventions needed and team communication.

These are 30-60 minutes in length and cover 1-2 cases. These are virtual and recorded for later viewing.

All obstetric care team members responsible for fetal monitoring are welcome.

Referring hospital teams gather with MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland clinical teams to review select maternal and neonatal transport cases. The cases are reviewed and discussed from initiation of care to the time of transfer to tertiary care, and beyond as appropriate.

The goals of review are to identify strengths, areas for improvement, discuss systems and processes, discuss relevant updates in standards of care, and provide education on relevant pathologies.

These are facility specific and confidential, and therefore not open for registration.  Contact your unit’s leadership to find out when your facility’s next transport conference is.

These are simulation programs that are coordinated by the Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation & Simulation at MaineHealth.  Perinatal outreach assists in administering these programs.

If your team or facility identifies an obstetric or perinatal education need, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are more than happy to provide tailored education and support to meet your needs!
