SMHC Opens New Location for Complex Wound Care in Sanford

January 24, 2024

Southern Maine Health Care Wound Care in Sanford is now equipped to handle complex wounds through the advanced technology of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

BIDDEFORD, Maine - Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) has expanded its wound care services with a new wound care center in Sanford. Southern Maine Health Care Wound Care offers comprehensive and innovative approaches to wound care including hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) to treat complex wounds resulting from diabetes, radiation burns, vascular disease, trauma wounds, pressure ulcers and more.

HBO has been proven to accelerate wound healing by increasing the level of oxygen in the tissue and improving the healing efficiency of the white blood cells. The wounds are exposed to 100 percent oxygen under pressure to patients in a closed single-person chamber.

“We have been looking forward to bringing this needed service to our patients who live in York County,” said SMHC wound care specialist Jessica Morse, MD. “Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is another level of advanced wound care that can help heal wounds that may have not responded to other therapies.”

In addition to treating wounds, hyperbaric oxygen is also helpful in treating other chronic conditions such as complications from radiation and bone infections known as osteomyelitis. Patients who are prescribed HBO typically require treatment five days a week for two-hour sessions. The HBO chamber includes a television and headphones for entertainment.

The new wound clinic is located within SMHC’s Goodall Medical Office Building at 25A June Street; Suite 012 in Sanford. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am until 4 pm. SMHC also operates a wound care center on its Biddeford campus. A referral is required to be seen at either location. SMHC Wound Care’s Biddeford location will continue to offer care three days per week.

Patients who would like to learn more about the care team and services provided should visit our wound and ostomy care service page or call 207-490-7495.
