Dr. Christine Runyan, Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the UMass Chan Medical School, will deliver the keynote address, 'Fostering Your Innate Resilience,' for the daylong symposium on Nov. 5
Maine Behavioral Healthcare, a division of MaineHealth, and the University of Southern Maine will present a daylong program of talks focused on building strength and perseverance in response to stresses caused by the pandemic. “Resilience from Trauma During the Time of Covid-19” will be held from 9 am to 3:30 pm on Friday, Nov. 5, in person at Hannaford Hall on USM’s Portland Campus or online. Area behavioral health providers, the USM community and the public are invited to attend. Please note that proof of full vaccination and masking is required for attendance in Hannaford Hall, where presenters will deliver their remarks in person. Participation in the program is free, but advance registration is required. Contact hour certificates are available for all participants, and lunch will be served to those who register for in-person attendance.
The symposium begins with the keynote address, “Fostering Your Innate Resilience,” by Dr. Christine Runyan, Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the UMass Chan Medical School and Co-founder of Tend Health. The program continues with the panel presentation “Resilience in the Face of Trauma: Individuals, Families, and Service Providers,” featuring Dr. Adele Baruch, Associate Professor and Chair of Counselor Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at USM; Susan Burns Chong, LCSW, Breathe Program Clinical Coach, Portland Public Schools and CAS student in Counselor Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at USM; and Alexandra Hood, graduate student in Counselor Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at USM.
After a break from 11:30 am to 1 pm, Dr. Thomas Linehan, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at Mount Wachusett Community College, will speak on “Understanding Trauma and Resilience Through the Magic of Every Interaction.” The program concludes with “Vicarious Resilience and Reconnecting to Joy” by Allegra Hirsh-Wright, MSW, LCSW, Training Manager and Project Director of Maine Behavioral Healthcare’s Department of Clinical Innovation and an adjunct faculty member in USM’s School of Social Work.
