Why MMC

When you make a donation to Maine Medical Center, you'll make an impact on the care that your friends, family, and neighbors receive in the moment they need it most.

You can feel good about making a donation to Maine Medical Center because:

  • "Best Regional Hospital” for seven years in a row (U.S. News and World Report);

  • Largest medical center, with 700 beds;

  • The only Level 1 Trauma Center and Level 1 Pediatric Intensive Care Unit;

  • The only full-service children’s hospital - The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital;

  • Earned the Magnet Recognition for Excellence in Nursing three times, an honor only 2% of hospitals nation-wide have achieved;

  • First Comprehensive Stroke Center;

  • Largest academic medical center and the state’s only allopathic medical school through our partnership with Tufts University School of Medicine;

  • Leader in biomedical research through the MaineHealth Institute for Research.

  • When you make a gift to Maine Medical Center, you’re joining a community dedicated to caring for the sick, funding programs that provide hope, and maintaining the facilities that bring it all together.

  • Annually, over 500 neonatal and pediatric critical care patients are transported to Maine Medical Center from our most rural regions.

  • Each year, 80 Maine students are receiving scholarships through the Maine Track—a program that roughly 50% of graduates of the program have returned to the state to practice medicine.

  • MMC researchers have made many discoveries including a hormone that has significant implications for diseases like diabetes. Other researchers are testing the viability of breakthroughs including a blood test for early detection of breast cancer, and an antibody that recognizes and inhibits tumor growth and metastasis.

  • More than 100 nurses are awarded scholarships for continuing education annually, bringing best practice to every bedside.

  • Community health is improved through unique initiatives such as the Let’s Go! Childhood Obesity Prevention Program that has brought the 5-2-1-0 message statewide.

  • Throughout its 150 year history, Maine Medical Center has evolved and met the changing needs of our community due to the foresight of astute volunteer board members and strong management.

  • Today, MMC is the flagship hospital of MaineHealth, anchoring the financial strength of the system.

  • MMC’s exceptional commitment to quality and safety is nationally recognized, including acclaim by U.S. News and World Report, The Joint Commission, and Magnet.

  • We are committed to stewarding our financial resources wisely. Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s Investors Service cited the financial strength of Maine Medical Center as the state’s leading tertiary care provider as a reason for their bullishness in their A+ and A1 ratings, respectively.

When you give to Maine Medical Center you help to provide an essential community benefit healthcare for all who need it, regardless of their ability to pay. In 2017, MMC provided more than $32 million in charity and unpaid care  as part of over $260 million in total community benefit.
