MaineHealth Peer Support Program

Practicing medicine can be highly rewarding and highly challenging. Whether you are just having a bad day or struggling with deeper challenges such as stress, burnout, isolation, interpersonal conflict, grief, operational challenges or work/life balance—it's important to know that you don't have to cope on your own.

What is the MaineHealth peer support program?

The MaineHealth peer support program provides confidential, peer-to-peer support for all MaineHealth providers, including physicians, nurses, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, physician associates, clinical support staff and allied health professionals.

The program is based on national models designed to address challenges before they become overwhelming. No event is too small for peer support. If you are stressed, worried or just need to talk, support is available for any reason. Peer supporters can provide perspective, help with self-awareness, share how they faced a similar situation or connect you with resources, if needed.

Who would I be speaking with?

Peer support team members are volunteers who have been specially trained to provide one-on-one support to colleagues. Conversations are completely voluntary and confidential. The supporter does not take notes or discuss your conversation with anyone else (unless there was a concern for your immediate physical safety).

How do I access peer support?

You may self-refer to the program or be referred by a colleague. To get started, send an email to your regional contact:

What if I want to talk to someone more anonymously?
