The MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence (CTI) works across the state of Maine to address tobacco use and exposure through education, prevention, policy, treatment and training initiatives.
Tobacco use includes smoking, vaping, chewing, and using nicotine pouches. It is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the US. There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Even brief exposure causes damage that can lead to serious disease and death. Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the US, including more than 41,000 deaths as a result of secondhand smoke exposure.
Tobacco treatment training for providers
Providers play an important role in helping patients access evidence-based tobacco use treatment. CTI is nationally accredited as a tobacco treatment specialist (TSS) certification program through the Council of Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP). We support organizations and providers in implementing tobacco control best practices and strategies. For more information, please call 207-662-7154 or email tobaccotrng@mainehealth.org.

Quitting nicotine is often the most important thing a person can do for their future health. Advice and assistance from health care providers is a powerful tool in helping people quit nicotine. Providers can increase patient and client success in becoming nicotine-free by connecting them to the Maine QuitLink. Nicotine users are 2-3 times more likely to quit successfully with the support of the Maine QuitLink than when they try to quit alone.
CTI works with hospitals and practices to integrate referrals to the Maine QuitLink into electronic health records. The goal is to increase the number of patients who are screened for tobacco use and offered evidence-based tobacco treatment services.
Embedding tobacco treatment referrals into the electronic health record increases referrals to evidence-based tobacco treatment and improves the quality of referrals when paired with onsite-training, performance feedback and technical assistance. CTI conducts ongoing performance improvement activities to drive tobacco intervention improvements across the MaineHealth system.
