Stephens Memorial Hospital provides high-quality health care in SAD #17 at school-based health centers (SBHCs) - augmenting school nurse services. Two SBHCs are available to students at Oxford Hills Middle School (grades 7-8) and Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School (grades 9-12). SBHCs provide care while keeping students in school and learning. This model of care significantly reduces ER visits, absenteeism, and the burden on parents to miss work to seek care for children.

Our Team

Dr. Kate Herlihy, Board-Certified Pediatrician, and Emily Karonis, Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, both of Western Maine Pediatrics, provide care at the SBHC. In addition, our team collaborates with the student's parents and primary care physician, and school nurses. Dr. Kate Herlihy of Western Maine Pediatrics is the program's Medical Advisor.

Our Services

School-based health centers (SBHCs) provide a variety of health care services. Providing these health care services directly in schools allows for easy access and scheduling and saves time for students and parents/guardians. Services include:

  • Routine physical exams, including sports physicals
  • Diagnosis and treatment of illness such as: cold, sore throat, headache, rash
  • Treatment of minor injuries
  • Vision, dental and blood pressure screenings
  • Vaccinations (shots)
  • Health education, counseling and wellness promotion
  • Nutrition education and weight management
  • Prescribing of medicines as needed
  • Behavioral health services by referral
  • Referral for health care services which cannot be provided at the SBHC
  • Health risk screenings
