Coming into medicine as a second career has provided me with the insight that there are often times when options are limited and the best direction is less straightforward than one would want. I think these attributes and experiences enabled me to offer kindness and empathy to the patients I encountered during residency, many of whom came from all parts of the world, often without the means to pay for their care. My mentors were not there for fame or academic glory. They were there to practice medicine, teach the next generation of physicians, and care for the underserved, and it was their example that I try to emulate. Moving on to fellowship training, I honed my clinical skills and built the foundations of my cardiology style, which entails utilization of imaging modalities such as Cardiac MRI, Cardiac CT, Echocardiography, and Nuclear Imaging – possibly because these instruments connect me back to my days from engineering – but also because one needs more information in order to direct care and offer insights into how to manage one’s condition(s). But I also learned that one’s health is not just about your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, it’s about how you feel overall.
