Dr. Ramiro Saavedra Romero, MD, FCCM, is an Intensivist specializing in cardiovascular critical care, with expertise in advanced life support therapies, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and the management of acute brain injury in critically ill patients. As a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM), he is recognized for his contributions to advancing critical care practice, leadership, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Dr. Saavedra Romero works closely with teams of physicians and advanced practice providers to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in complex clinical environments. He is committed to improving outcomes through evidence-based practice and system-level innovation in critical care delivery.
His academic and research efforts focus on optimizing ECMO management strategies—particularly mechanical support to enhance physiologic outcomes—and advancing the understanding of acute brain injury in critically ill populations.
He serves as Director of the Cardiovascular Critical Care Division and Medical Director of the Adult ECMO Program at MaineHealth.
