WASHINGTON, D.C.  – MaineHealth Southern Region Chief Nursing Officer Devin Carr and MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland nurse practitioner Valerie Fuller have been named as 2025 Fellows in the American Academy of Nursing.

The fellowship is considered one of the highest honors in nursing. Fellows are selected in recognition of their substantial contributions in the areas of policy, research, practice, administration and academia. The 2025 class hails from 12 countries, and 42 U.S. states as well as Washington D.C. Carr and Fuller were the only inductees from Maine.

"Being inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing is a profound honor that reflects over 25 years of dedication and commitment to advancing the science and practice of nursing, with specific emphasis on fundamental care,” Carr said. “It’s deeply rewarding to see this work recognized, and I remain committed to elevating the discipline and demonstrating the essential value of nursing in every facet of health care."

Fuller, who is also the president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, said, “I am deeply honored to be inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and it is a privilege to join a distinguished community of nurse leaders whose collective work continues to transform health care at every level. This recognition celebrates the priorities that have guided my career: advancing evidence-based practice, shaping health policy and strengthening the role of the nursing profession in improving access and quality of care.”

The American Academy of Nursing formally inducted Carr and Fuller as Fellows during its annual Health Policy Conference in Washington D.C., on October 18.
