PORTLAND, Maine – U.S. News & World Report has named Maine Medical Center (MMC) as the top hospital in Maine for 2023-2024. This is the 11th straight year U.S. News has named MMC “Best Regional Hospital.” U.S. News also rated MMC as “high performing” in 13 common procedures and conditions as well as in the specialty of Urology.
“The consistency of this ranking by U.S. News speaks to the high-quality patient-centered care that our team provides year after year,” said Joel Botler, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Interim President of MaineHealth’s Southern Region, which includes MMC. “MMC never takes these rankings for granted, and will continue to look for ways to improve as we strive towards our vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.”
U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 21 procedures and conditions with a goal of helping patients choose the best hospitals for them. Only 12 percent of evaluated hospitals earned a Best Hospitals ranking. According to U.S. News, hospitals awarded a “Best” designation excelled at factors such as clinical outcomes, level of nursing care and patient experience.
A “high performing” rating is the highest distinction a hospital can earn in each of the procedures and conditions that U.S. News rated. Fewer than half of all hospitals earned any “high performing” rating. MMC received one in the specialty of Urology as well as in these 13 common procedures and conditions:
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
- Aortic valve surgery
- Back surgery (spinal fusion)
- Colon cancer surgery
- Diabetes
- Heart attack
- Heart bypass surgery
- Hip replacement
- Knee replacement
- Leukemia, lymphoma & myeloma
- Lung cancer surgery
- Ovarian cancer surgery
- Prostate cancer surgery
