PORTLAND, Maine – For the second time in a row, Maine Medical Center (MMC) has received an “A” grade in the spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. Every six months, the Leapfrog Group, an independent health care quality evaluator, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to participating general hospitals across the country, measuring how well each protects patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.
“This recognition speaks to the hard work and commitment to quality care demonstrated by MMC’s care team each day,” said MMC President Jeff Sanders. “It takes an entire team, from bedside professionals to integrated support staff, to achieve the outcomes that drive an ‘A’ score.”
Leapfrog is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patients in their care, according to the Leapfrog Group. Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed, and the results are free to the public.
In addition to MMC, the four other eligible MaineHealth hospitals – Franklin Memorial Hospital, Mid Coast Hospital, Pen Bay Medical Center and Southern Maine Health Care – received an ‘A’ grade, the highest safety grade Leapfrog offers. Each MaineHealth hospital received an ‘A’ Safety Grade in both the fall 2020 and spring 2021 Leapfrog surveys.
