The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital

Meet McKenzie

young girl smiling, wearing glasses and red shirt that reads "bates 1"

When McKenzie was about a month old, her mother noticed that she was having a hard time eating and growing. A visit to her pediatrician to discuss these concerns resulted in an ambulance ride to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, where McKenzie spent the next 2 weeks. Genetic testing revealed a rare diagnosis of Infantile Pompe Disease. Today, McKenzie is 8 years old and has had more than 100 visits to BBCH. She and her mom consider the BBCH staff their family, and the first thing McKenzie does when she’s hospitalized is to visit “Miss Alice” on the Child Life team for a hug.
