Campaign for Coastal Health
Join us in building the future of health care for midcoast Maine.
As partners, Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital have an exceptional opportunity to improve health care services for the midcoast region of Maine. Our leaders have given deliberate thought to how we can best serve this area together.
Today, we are poised to become an even stronger hub for the primary care, specialty care, and emergency care services that you, your family, and your neighbors need. But we can’t do it without your help. The Campaign for Coastal Health will ensure that Pen Bay Medical Center can meet these challenges working side by side with Waldo County General Hospital. Our vision depends on your support. We invite you to learn more and join us in building the future of healthcare for mid-coast Maine.
With your health, efficiency and sustainability in mind, we are constructing a new two-story health center on the Pen Bay Medical Center campus.
This new facility will bring together our current primary care physicians – family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics – into a single, thoughtfully-designed facility. This will make it easier for physicians and staff to collaborate and to connect you with the wellness, prevention and specialty services you need.
The health center will also provide space where specialists from the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland can meet with patients in Rockport. This will reduce the need for children with special health needs to travel to Portland.
The new health center will offer the following clinical services:
- Family medicine
- Internal medicine
- Outpatient psychiatry
- Pediatrics
- Pediatric physical and occupational therapy
- Pediatric speech language pathology and hearing services
- Ear, nose, and throat specialty services
The new health center will improve access-to-care while controlling costs by providing:
- Space for 10 additional providers, most in primary care, along with 21 current physicians
- Projected 17% increase in annual patient visits overall
- 33% increase in pediatrics
- 32% increase in adult primary care
- 50% increase in overall square footage
- $500,000+ in annual savings by eliminating the need to rent office space for multiple practices
The new health center will provide the modern, attractive and cost-efficient office and clinical spaces that will carry us into the future.
With a shortage of primary care physicians nationwide, the recruitment and retention of physicians is a real challenge. Today, we must compete with larger medical centers that are able to provide modern, spacious facilities for their medical staff.
Over the past several years, we have recruited a number of new physicians. Now our challenge is to house these new doctors, as well as our existing providers, in spaces that empower them to create the best patient experience possible.
The Campaign for Coastal Health seeks $4 million in community support to help build the new Emergency Department at Pen Bay Medical Center.
When an emergency strikes, you can rely on having quick access to the Emergency Department (ED) at Pen Bay Medical Center or Waldo County General Hospital. We are fortunate to have the emergency medicine physicians and specialists right here who can diagnose a full range of health issues and get patients the care they need.
At Waldo County General Hospital, construction of a new state-of-the-art ED was completed in the July 2019. The Campaign for Coastal Health will bring Pen Bay Medical Center’s ED up to the same high standard. Our goal is to ensure that that any mid-coast resident who turns to us in a time of crisis receives advanced, comfortable and personalized ED care.
The new Pen Bay Medical Center ED space will:
- Improve patient flow
- Incorporate updated technology for diagnosing and monitoring high-acuity patients
- Address the growing demand for psychiatric and addiction services
It will be designed with a level of comfort and privacy that reduces the stress associated with seeking care in the emergency department. The project will strengthen our future as a medical center and a community.
