PORTLAND, MaineMaine Medical Center (MMC) was awarded an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for fall 2022, the highest grade that Leapfrog offers. Leapfrog, an independent national quality evaluator, awards letter grades to hospitals every six months based on each hospital’s ability to prevent medical errors and harm to patients. This is the fifth consecutive ‘A’ grade for MMC.

“The past two years have created enormous challenges for our care team, but they continue to make high-quality, safe, patient-centered care their top priority,” said MMC President Jeff Sanders. “Even as we celebrate this achievement, our team is continuing to look for ways to improve our care and achieve our vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is a peer-reviewed assessment of hospital performance on more than 30 measures in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other types of harm to patients in their care. MMC received high marks for its Magnet-recognized nursing program, comprehensive levels of hand hygiene compliance, steps taken to ensure medication safety and number of critical-care physicians in its Intensive Care Unit.

“I applaud the hospital leadership and workforce for their strong commitment to safety and transparency,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a sign that hospitals are continuously evaluating their performance, so that they can best protect patients. Your hospital team should be extremely proud of their dedication and achievement.”
