Innovative robotic technology allows surgeons to personalize total knee and total hip replacement procedures to each patient.

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) is the first hospital in MaineHealth to offer Mako SmartRobotics™. This advancement in joint replacement surgery is now an option for hip or knee replacement patients at SMHC – expanding the minimally invasive surgery program offered at the hospital.

Mako SmartRobotics™ combines the latest robotic technology, combined with 3D CT-based planning and data analytics to provide a new option for total hip replacement, total knee replacement, and partial knee replacement.

“Mako’s 3D CT allows me to create a plan based on each patient’s anatomy before entering the operating room,” said Jeff Bush, MD. “During surgery, I validate that plan and make necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic arm to execute that plan. The precision of the robotic arm is a step forward in joint replacement. We can do this surgery through a minimally invasive approach with less soft tissue damage and greater bone preservation. It’s exciting to be able to offer this transformative technology across the joint replacement service line to perform knee and total hip replacements.”

Mako SmartRoboticsTM for joint replacements is a treatment option designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis that has not yet progressed to other areas. During surgery, the surgeon guides the robotic arm to execute the surgery and position the implant.

“We are proud to be the first hospital in the MaineHealth system to offer this highly advanced SmartRoboticsTM technology,” said Nathan Howell, President, SMHC. “Offering innovative technology like this helps us achieve our vision of working together to make our communities the healthiest in America by offering cutting-edge technology right here in York County.”
