PORTLAND, Maine — U.S. News & World Report has named Maine Medical Center (MMC) as the best hospital in Maine for 2020-2021. This is the eighth consecutive year MMC was named as a “Best Regional Hospital.” MMC also was recognized as “high performing” in the specialty of urology and in all 10 common procedures and conditions included in the annual survey of U.S. hospitals.

“This report is an objective validation that Maine Medical Center is committed to our mission of caring for our community, educating tomorrow’s caregivers and researching new ways to provide care,” said Maine Medical Center President Jeff Sanders “MMC is invested in continuously improving the way it delivers high-quality, patient-centered care in the safest way possible.”

For the 2020-21 ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide. The state rankings recognize hospitals that received high performing ratings across multiple areas of care.

MMC received recognition as a “high performing” hospital in the specialty of urology. According to U.S. News, a hospital is rated “high performing” in a specialty category if it’s scored in the top 10 percent nationwide. U.S. News also rated MMC as “high performing” in these ten common procedures and conditions:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
  • Aortic valve surgery
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Colon cancer surgery
  • Heart bypass surgery
  • Heart failure
  • Hip replacement
  • Knee replacement
  • Lung cancer surgery
  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
Less than one-third of all hospitals received any high-performing rating, and MMC is one of just 37 to earn this rating in all 10 procedures and conditions.

The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators, to help consumers find good sources of local care.
