CLINICAL BASE YEAR (INTERN)
Anesthesia residents at Maine Medical Center complete a medicine preliminary internship prior to their anesthesia training. Residents must have a solid base of medical knowledge to build upon in the following years.
PGY 1 YEAR
- Rotations include

- Emergency Medicine

- Medicine Wards
- Cardiology Consult
- Pulmonology Consult
- Fundamentals in Ultrasound
- Acute Pain Medicine Service (APMS)
- Clinical Anesthesia- Intensive 1-week orientation “Boot Camp” at our Simulation Center
- Paired 1:1 with attending or senior residents during first month
- Clinical Information Systems/Patient Safety
CLINICAL ANESTHESIA YEAR 1 (CA1)
- Rotations for the first half of the year include:
- General OR Rotations
- Outpatient Surgery Center
- PREP Clinic rotation
- PACU rotation
- Acute Pain Management rotation
- Subspecialty rotations for the second semester include:
- Pediatric Anesthesiology
- Vascular/ Thoracic Anesthesiology
- Neuro Anesthesiology
- Obstetrical Anesthesiology
- Surgical Critical Care
CLINICAL ANESTHESIA YEAR 2 (CA2)
The CA2 year consists of 2 blocks of Advanced Clinical Track (ACT) anesthesiology encompassing advanced general OR cases as well as 9 subspecialty training blocks including:
- Cardiovascular Anesthesiology (2-months)
- Pediatric Anesthesiology
- Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU)
- Regional Block/ Post-Operative Pain Management
- Pain Medicine
- Ambulatory Surgery Center
- Vascular Thoracic Anesthesiology
- Orthopedics
- Non-OR Anesthesia (NORA)
- Neuroanesthesia
CLINICAL ANESTHESIA YEAR 3 (CA3)
More flexibility in training, offering 4 elective blocks.
Elective rotations include, but are not limited to:
- Additional general subspecialty blocks
- Medical simulation
- TEE
- Community Hospital Medicine-Medical Direction & Supervision-Southern Maine Medical Center
- Research
- International Medicine
- Rural Anesthetic-Franklin Memorial Hospital
- Bloodbank
Required subspecialty blocks during the CA3 year include:
- Pre-Admission Unit (outpatient preoperative evaluation)/Preoperative Clinic (PREP)

Maine Medical Center offers a unique didactic approach where residents have one full non-clinical day per week focusing on didactic lectures, simulation, journal club and scholarly activity.

6:15 AM - 7:00 AM Cardiac Conference (1st & 3rd Wednesdays)-For residents on Cardiac Rotation
Thursday Schedule:
6:15 AM - 7:00 AM Third Thursday of the Month-Critical Incident Committee
6:15 AM - 7:00 AM Second Thursday of the Month -Quality Improvement Committee
7:00 AM - 8:00 AM Grand Rounds, Dana Auditorium

8:00 AM - 11 AM Didactic Lecture Series, board review, keyword presentations

- Residents train at the State-of-the-art Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation & Simulation
- (38) simulation events per year
- Simulation training is class specific (CA1, CA2, CA3)
- Mentored by department faculty
- Held four times per year
- Residents instructed on how to interpret data
- Residents present articles and then lead the discussions
- Mock oral boards are given three times per year (all classes)
- Monthly written board preparation with various staff members
- Several ABA Oral Board Examiners within the department who ensure continuity with the ABA’s procedures
- Oral Board and OSCE simulation for CA3 residents
- Monthly oral board preparation with chair
- Board preparation materials provided by department
- Required books are purchased for all residents by the department
