What are anxiety disorders?
Anxiety disorders are a group of disorders that cause people to be anxious, fearful and worried a lot of the time. There are different types of anxiety disorders:
- General anxiety disorder
- Panic disorder
- Phobias
- Social anxiety disorder
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
People with anxiety disorders can have more than one condition. Speak with your primary care doctor if you believe you could have an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety disorder symptoms
People with anxiety disorders can be:
- Fearful
- Always expecting bad things to happen
- Tense or jumpy
- Restless or cranky
- Worried a lot of the time

Anxiety disorders are common. If you have an anxiety disorder, you may experience the following physical problems:
- Palpitations
- Shortness of breath or rapid breathing
- Tingling in the hands, feet, and around the mouth
- Frequent urination or diarrhea
- Sweating
- Tremors and twitches
- Upset stomach
- Sleeplessness
Diagnosing anxiety disorders
Lab tests or other tests such as an electrocardiogram may be conducted to rule out other issues that can cause physical anxiety symptoms.
Your primary care provider may refer you to a mental health specialist to help diagnose and treat an anxiety disorder.
